I'm tired of running out of space on my little 120Gb 2.5" SATA so I've been looking around for something a bit bigger but only want to spend around $100. It's come down to either a 320Gb WD Scorpio Black or Seagate Momentus 7200.4. Both get good reviews online but I was just wondering if anyone here had any experience with either?

Secondly, how easy it going to be to install Vista on the new HDD. I only have a boot type disc that came with the lappy, is this enough?
I have a 1TB external drive, is there anyway I can use this to just copy everything off the old drive onto the new one?

Can't advise on either of those HDD although as long as there are not long/many threads in forums about them failing then just go with the one with the best performace.

As for getting your data over easiest way is with software like partition magic or similar which will allow you to copy over the existing disk to the new disk and then extend the partition out to fill the new drive or you could add a new partition which would give you a D: drive as well as the C:.

I'm going to borrow a mates HDD case (as mine is a sealed seagate) & clone the existing HDD

If you have any Seagate or Maxtor drives in your system (even if they're not the ones you're using), you can use Seagate DiscWizard (download it from the Seagate website) which is a free branded version of Acronis TrueImage.

I find it to be a very useful program for cloning hard drives, and it's free. If you don't have any Seagate drives in your system, plugging in your external Seagate drive should work.

Thanks michaelt. Downloaded that Seagate disc wizzard yesterday. Only took an hour or so to clone the HDD over a few beers last night. Very easy bit of software to use. It's all up & running sweet now.

The new Seagate Momentus 7200.4 HDD I installed is so quiet compaired to the old OE Hitachi. Now to start fulling it up with junk again...
