I am about to buy a 10.2 inch touchscreen netbook with 3g sim slot, GPRS, bluetooth, 2 gb ram and wireless G.

I intend to install my voip softphone and use it as a comms centre. The only peripher being a BT headset.

What I want to know is, can I put an SSD into it ?

If so, can I put a 250gb SSD in to replace the 160 gb HDD ?

With this upgrade the performance would be enhanced and it would serve as a great work tool, phone, diary, book reader, yada yada.

I am also going to have a bracket made by a friend so that it fits in the car, on the wall at home where it will connect to my usb SB external sound card and 5.1 speakers, run my X10 home automation network, and connect to my IP wireless door camera.

Ooops, bragging here boys.

So, will it take the SSD ?

Oh, it is unbranded.

Hard to say without knowing models. Some "netbooks" don't use HDD at all, some use with non-SATA interfaces.

If you want a SSD, the netbook must have a SATA HDD in order for it to be replaced. Also you will find out that some netbook are not that powerful at all (actually read sometime ago that a high number are returned when people realise this) and using a SSD may be an overkill - it might cost more than the netbook itself.

What I mean is that once you have it booted up it won't make much difference, because I/O won't be the bottleneck in your system.

Good advices. As usual. My brother has a netbook and he uses voip on his. It's an AcerOne. The one I want is an exact same spec, but unbranded.

My brother added an extra gig of ram and a 16gb SD card and it runs Win 7, office, web, voip etc extremely well. I am interested in the touchscreen version as it would be great to combine my phone, GPS and apps all in one smart little package.

BTW, the SSD is my brothers idea, he is upgrading his. Perhaps I should wait and see then report back here, unless anyone has already done it and has some advice.

Got it about the cost, but I am really interested in my plan to have it do all of the above. In each app it should perform ok with planned improvements. Just have to make sure it does not get cluttered.

The best thing you can do to increase performance in any computer these days is add more RAM.

It depends on the model - and your plan is to get an "unbranded" one, so no real idea... Whatever it is, don't get the minimum...
