~4yr old nw8440 laptop (15", 1920 * 1200 screen).  Screen is failing rapidly - pink tinge on start up & blanked out (eg. washed out, image 'dithered' > image lost) a couple of times on Friday.  May have overheated, but clearly failing.

Any recommendations for a good laptop repair company in Wellington?

Hmmmm, do you think it's actually worth it? You can get the laptops for about $500 on TM or Ebay

Screen replacement off Ebay is $109US+29 shipping for a second hander...that means it'll be about $200 price from the Laptop Repair shop in town

+ Another 2 hours labour depending on what they charge, 95+ would be a guess x 2 \
Laptop Repair - $95.00 - quoted by the website as the minimum cost

Being a full HD 15" probably means the screens will have to be imported by the company too

Might end up being cheaper to get a new laptop?

Whoops also, forgot to mention, the above things could be signs of any of the following:
- Graphics card on the way out
- Screen on the way out
- Faulty cable
- Faulty inverter
- Faulty Backlight

His laptop is a HP workstation, not like those $500 cheap laptops on Trade Me, I'd say maybe it is worth to go for a repair, however most of the repair centres, such as Visual Group, Service Plus will normally charge $90 for inspection + $ for parts (normally $300 to $500 for screen, $200 to $500 for Motherboard stuffs), plus some labour charge.
There are some good companies offering a better price and service in Auckland, have no idea about Wellington :(

Thanks for the replies. Yes it is a commercial quality workstation laptop.  There seem few new 15" models around with 1920 resolution screens short of big money.  Very much hoping I can extend life of this one for 12 - 18 mths till sandy bridge / SSD models are around & at a 'reasonable' price.  Did not see any nw8440 machines on TM & anyway not keen on paying $500 for someone else's possibly soon to fail screen.  But more importantly, have an urgent project on at the moment & no time to reload all the software, incl GIS stuff that has licensing issues (keys) etc.

I eventually went with M&T - seem OK so far.  Yes they did charge $95 to inspect.  They have ordered a new screen from o/s.  Have been quoted $395+GST total to fix (includes the initial $95) but I got the laptop back in the interim (couriered to Wgtn north) about 90mins after I dropped it off.  That was an important consideration as it is required as additional computing power on the urgent project.  Screen has now failed completely but the laptop is working fine with an external monitor attached.  Similar for the final fix - should be out of use for less than 2 hours.  Others said they would need the laptop for 4 days or more - in one case it would be 4 - 5 days before they would even look at it (unless I paid an additional ~$150 urgent fee on top of any inspection & repair cost).  Now just waiting to see how M&T perform on the final fix (timing the main consideration now - need it for an overseas trip in a weeks time).

M&T group = Monitor & Terminal who have been around for years.

I used to deal with them quite a lot back when they were still called "Monitor & Terminal" and always found them great to deal with. We mainly used them for monitor repairs rather than laptops, but the boss back then (Wayne) was a really onto it chap, and I doubt the service levels have changed if hes still the boss.
