Hi guys,

I'm in the market for a 14" laptop for my partner.

It's come down to either the Toshiba Satelitte L640/01H or Sony VPCEA25. Both sit just over the (NZ) $1000 mark.

Here are the key specs:

Sony VPCEA25 http://www.sony.co.nz/product/vpcea25fg
2.26 Ghz Intel core i3 processor
4GB Ram
320GB HDD
512MB Graphics Card
2.35kg

Toshiba Satelitte L640/01H http://www.dse.co.nz/dse.shop/en/product/XC8844
2.26 Ghz Intel core i5 processor
2GB Ram
320GB HDD
Unknown Graphics Card
2.30kg

Which one would you buy?

On paper it looks like the Sony looks like the better computer with another 2GB of ram, but is it really the better computer?

A guy at Dick Smiths just told me that the reason they don't sell the Sony's anymore is because they are rubbish compared to Toshibas. Any truth to that?

Appreciate any insights!

I wouldnt say rubbish compared to Toshibas, but expensive for the build quality for the few Ive used in past years.

Id take the Toshiba over the Sony, Ive been kicking a Toshiba Satellite (work laptop) around for about a year now and very happy with it and does what i need it to without any issues :)

Thanks very much Gavin,

So Sony's laptop has come down to $1099 and DSE will do the Toshiba for $1199.

Would you still go for the Toshiba?

Hmm tough call really, the Tosh has the extra power over the Sony but that comes at a cost of battery life etc.....

Personally Id probably take the Tosh if it has a dedicated video card but thats because I enjoy the occasional game so the extra CPU grunt helps :) But I would throw in an extra 2GB of RAM as well, so cost would go up a tad more again.

If I was on a tight budget, then the Sony it would probably be.

Both have this really annoying glare displays, with a meager resolution of 1366x768 pixels.

When using a vertical resolution of only 768 pixels, I constantly find myself scrolling up and down in my browser window. That's very annoying.

And many other users feel the same way: Therefore I started a group on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_153240404724993
