Hi there.

Looking to get one of these. We are going to Sydney for a week soon so one option is to purchase over there - maybe duty free? I am pretty sure they have world wide guarantees.

Does anybody have any thoughts re this - i.e. yes is its a good idea (or not) and where to go.

Thanks.

With the dollar at the moment, it may not be that much cheaper anyway, except with the tax exemption. If you buy from Apple or elsewhere, you can still claim the GST (10%) back on the way through the airport, duty free just avoids the hassle of paying it and claiming it backs again.

AppleCare is global, so you're covered on that front.

Provided you pay the astronomical price for AppleCare...

Comes with 1 year out of the box.  Besides which the cost of extended AppleCare has paid for itself several times over during the life of some of my Apple gear, I highly recommend it.
