Hi all, so about 1 year ago my sister-in-law purchased a Compaq Presario laptop, nothing fancy all she wanted was web, email, word and to be able to play DVDs. Anyway the other day she calls and says it's not working. So I popped over and logged on to see a message saying it maybe running a counterfeit OS, I followed through some options that took me to Microsoft where it downloaded a small app (sorry I forget the name). Anyway this ran a scan and told me that the trial version of Windows 7 had expired and I needed to purchase the full version. To me this sounded wrong that a new laptop, bought from a reputable store would only have a trial OS. The store concerned initially said it sounded strange but have now reverted to "she must have pressed the wrong button". Has anyone had a similar experience with a new laptop or PC only running a trial OS? TIA

Have you tried entering the Serial number on the bottom of the laptop?

if that fails use the recovery media and that should fix it. if its a software related issue causing windows to be like this

No haven't had that problem, so can't assist with solutions.  However - maybe download a Linux eg Pclinuxos which will do all she asks, and is free.

Just a thought.  I run Pclinuxos 2010 kde on a Compaq Presario , 1.6 processor I think, 1 G RAM - runs very nicely, and is easy as a transition from Windows.

Make sure you have two copies of everything she needs, take note of all configuration settings, and reinstall the OS from the restore disks or partition.
