Hello all.

I am looking for a laptop to take to University. Something that could play some games, hopefully with a half-decent speaker system and good battery life.

I am after any recommendations at this point.

Budget around $1500, I also have an external hard-drive so a HUGE hard-drive is not a neccesity.

Thank's a lot!

Depending on how much you need to get around:

For uni, personally I would go for a small form factor and headphones. A 1kg SFF machine never gets in the way.

A 3kg machine with a giant carry bag can be restricting.

+1

I use a netbook at uni (You are only really supposed to be taking notes anyway :P) it's much lighter than lugging around a fullsize laptop. I have a PC at home, and use the lab computers though, so I didn't really need a fullsize one either. But if you don't have a PC at home and the lab computers REALLY suck (and you want to lug it over to a mates for a lan), then get a fullsize one.

That really depends on what kind of games you want to play. Anything specific? You could mean something like heroes of might and magic 3, or you could mean COD:Black Ops.

I would like to get a half-decent laptop rather than a notebook.

I am not living at home and will not have any other computer's available.

The higher demanding games the better, want to future-proof as much as possible

for that kind of money, your best bet will probably be the Inspiron 15R for $1299 or go up to $1599 and get an extra 2gb ram and a br drive

The HD5650 is ok, but I doubt you will find better for the money you want to spend.

That looks good.

Have read some good reviews on it as well.

Any other recommendations?

they actually have them at jbhifi in Wellington, so depending on where you are, you could even go and have a look at one.

talking about the 15r btw

Or JB are actually advertising a core i7, 6gb, 640gb, GT435 2gb card. for $1,878 - they are selling dells - so it is an xps15. or the xps15 with same cpu, 4gb, 640gb, hd5650 for $1748
