Hi guys having a problem with my laptop its a dell vostro 1510 running win7 and has optaric dvd burner

One day it stopped writing cds but i could make a data dvd so i thought it was the lens. got an external writer which my mates computer would work sweet with (compaq win7). Seems to pickup a data disk also and i can use it but when i try to write a CD on itunes it will disappear and cant find the drive in my computer. Tryed a reg clearer specifically designed for that problem on google and lost both drives visibility on itunes. have since got them back but cant write any CD on both drives

Any ideas?
Thanks

Cam

To start with, try using a different application to do the burning, and see if that works.

I find myself using cdburnerxp quite a lot - small download, has been reliable on a number of different systems and drives over time.

After that, if no success maybe see if there is firmware available which you know 100% is for that drive and apply it.

There are several diagnostic utilities which give information about the drive capability, but I'm not sure if they will be useful in this situation.

Hi thanks for the reply. Have tried that but the burner just keeps making a noise like the lens is moving same as the internal drive

Just to check, you could boot a different o/s from CDR (maybe ubuntu) and see if you can write with that.

But, it sounds like a local software configuration problem. You could google windows 7 cd writing registry for a few things to look at, including this.
