I need a hi performance laptop. I make signs.
I use corel 11, I work with vector line art and
work on bitmaps. I just read some not so good things here about Toshiba.
Maybe I should rethink?

Heres specs on a Toshiba for $1050.

Everything in the specs look good - except the video card, which is a shared one. And the video card could possibly be the thing that your kind of work will stress out more in the system.

Hi Sherrie, what did you read about Toshiba?

I can vouch for Toshiba laptops, the warranty support has been good in my experience and the hardware works well with Linux (which to me is a good attribute)

But as freitasm has mentioned, having a good graphics chip can really help even if your not into 3D gaming. Nvidia is my choice of graphics chip.

I wouldn't question Toshiba's quality. I have a Toshiba M205 Tablet PC (bought in the USA a few years ago) and it performs really well. I never had problem with the laptop in itself and I carry it on travels around the world. Quite nice and resistant to lots of use.

Thanks Guys! Well, I got it. I don't know about the
video card...I just decided to go with it.
Can I upgrade video later?
I know most designers use Mac, but for some reason most
sign people use PC. It has always worked for me
and I need to be really compatible with other sign
comp[aniew since we sub work back and forth.
So far it is great, I have ex monitor hooked up (it supports dual montors!)
, mouse etc.
Even tho I am using this as a "desktop"...
I need a laptop in case I have to move my business.

You can't upgrade the video in laptops. You should have chosen a laptop with video card instead.. especially if you'll use it for design.

I would recommend Sony Vaio SZ series, but you already bought the Toshiba. Anyway good luck with it.

I disagree... A dual core 1.73GHz, 2GB RAM and SATA disk drive is a high performance laptop in anyone's books. It's not high performance in the video department, but it will do well for this kind of use, I think.

Slower Core Duo with slower front side bus, this is a budget laptop at a budget price sold through budget retailers

No doubt great for the posters needs though but not a high performance laptop.

any toshiba users noticed how they put the windows key as well as the context key (right-click key) up at the top right part of the keyboard? The only toshiba laptops that do not have that configuration are the 17" models.

I totally hate that as it means i have to do two-hands operation to get Win-E or Win-Tab or whatever... How unnatural.

I would also suggest that new Tosiba laptop that can play HD-DVDs if your a movie buff. This machine should be high performance as playing 1080p video is no easy feat. (im not sure if its in NZ or not yet, someone may correct me)

The new Toshiba Qosmio G30 is in New Zealand. I had lunch with Toshiba's General Manager, plus a couple of Australian marketing folks here in Wellington, when they showed the Qosmio and did a demo of HD DVD... Really nice stuff. I've played with a Toshiba Qosmio before HD DVD, but they are sending me the new model later to test some of the new HD DVD titles.

The model is available in New Zealand for about NZ$6200, at Harvey Norman.

WOW. Now that's a hi performance laptop!
Someone asked earlier...is price a factor.
I should have said up front...YES.
I just make signs for a living.
I won't be running videos at all.
I might regret the integrated video card...I will let u know.
I think for what I am using it for, it will be fine.
I would have bought it anyway for the price $1050. after rebates.
( unfortunately that is a factor for me).
So far I have a monitor I got for $150 after 2 rebates
and this Toshiba has a monitor "port"?? ...worked great
after adjustments looks good.
& a mouse & keyboard...so very comfortable.
Oh yeah... does anyone know what activates the duo touchpad?
It activates for no reason.

I just bought a new Dell e1705 with 2ghz core duo, 100gb 7200rpm, 2gb DDR2 667mhz and nVidia 7900 GS.

Hopefully it'll be delivered on aug 04.

The best of it? I paid just US$1900,00 with two 9 cell batteries, a docking station and spare ac adapter.

Dell has great deals once in a while.
