My laptop has recently started shutting down abruptly without notice and I think it's due to overheating although now it's not even warm in the slightest when it stops. I am wondering if there is a way to manually control fan speed or manage temperature of the computer.
 Cheers everyone,
Christian

Might be worth mentioning the brand and model.
There was a third party fan controller for the ASUS eee - dont know if there are others - but I should think the software (if any) could be tied to the hardware.

Also - I googled laptop processor heat monitor and got this as the second result:

Speedfan is popular and does temp monitoring for a lot of things.

Is it heavy gaming (GPU) or some other performance use (CPU) which is causing it to shutdown? or just after a certain period of time?

Actually, speedfan can often answer that..
