Short story:  the magic smoke has left my Compaq 6175b notebook and I was hoping that someone would have a schematic diagram/parts list/diagram for the motherboard so I can have a go at replacing the ICs with ones that still have their smoke inside them.

Long story: the notebook power supply cable failed after many uses, so in order to save money I decided to replace it from a ‘Genuine HP’ charger, of the right specs, from Trademe. I should have been suspicious when the power supply turned up, appeared to be of lower quality build, lighter and ran hot. Genuine, yeah right! Well, after a few days of use the 6175b started smoking. I quickly shut down but too late, the magic smoke was gone. I can see 2 burnt out ICs on the mother board, if that’s the only problem the board might be saveable, but I don’t know what the ICs were to replace them. As far as the power supply is concerned, it has all the right labels, but internally it has minimal shielding and heatsink – obviously a ripoff. Won’t be using that again – beware of buying HP power supplies off Trademe.
