Bought a Belkin F3U150 USB 2.0 (& USB 1.1) file transfer cable (from Ascent NZ). Does truly (Windows XP) seem to be "zero configuration": plug in to each machine and (after automatic recognition) on each machine there appears a split window showing the file trees of both machines.

This is a nice tool. I had a similar one, from another brand and gave it during one of our weekly chats a while ago. Very good for those moments when you don't have a network available to transfer files between machines.

This cable sounds pretty much ideal. I'm interested in the share your internet connection feature. Has that been as easy to set up as the file transfer?

Haven't tried that. Instructions look OK, but it does seem to require un/re-plugging of the cable.

A word of warning. I bought one and it is (or may be was!) a nice file transfer cable. However I did the procedure to set up internet connection sharing and after the final unplug and reconnect it came up with the message "USB device not recognized" on both computers. Since then I've rebooted, reconnected the cable, swapped ends around, tried different USB ports and removed the system tray icon by telling it to go back to file transfer mode. It's still unrecognized. I'm searching for fixes but for now it's been rendered useless

I got the DSE's one (XH8177) and you can set it up as virtual network or file transfer cable (one or the other but not both at the same installation).

The Virtual network works great, haven't try the file transfer as i have no need for the time being. And from the manual, you will need to remove one utility before using the other one.

Internet is my backyard...
