Anyone know where I can quickly get hold of a new hard drive for my Acer e-Machine E640? I've been looking online but the generic ones don't say whether they're compatible or not (I'm not too good with computers!).

Mine died a couple of weeks ago so I could do with a bit of advice as to how to get Windows 7 onto my new one without paying for it again. Can I just email Mcrosoft or is there an easier way? It came pre-installed on the laptop so I don't have a CD.

Lastly, I spoke to a guy at Dick Smith Electronics who said if the laptop is outside it's warranty and I could use a screwdriver I could probably fit the HDD myself. Is this advisable or should I give it to an expert?

You just need a 2.5 inch sata drive you can replace it yourself but if you find a local computer store they may reinstall the os and sort the drive at a reasonable price.

Which part of the country are you in? Can help you out if you're in Rotorua.

Cheers for that. I am in Rotorua but was quoted over $300 to do all that. The laptop's only $700 brand new (probably less in the boxing day sales) so unless I can replace the HDD dirt cheap I'll probably buy a new one.

This is the cheapest HDD I can find http://pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=HDDSE4326&name=Seagate-2.5-Thin-320GB-Momentus-16M-7200RPM-Intern

How much would you estimate to install the HDD and re-install the OS?

Since you (presumably) have the Windows7 key sticker on the bottom you can use any Windows7 media to reinstall Windows.

Yes I do have the sticker. How would I install Windows 7 without buying it?

except a windows 7 business disk doesn't contain home premium where as ultimate does - make sure you get the right version - often its hard to find disks as most now use a recovery image.
