Hi Folks.

I am drawing a bit of a blank with this one. I have a mates HP Probook 6550b here which has random BSOD 00000124 errors. It happens perhaps a couple of times a day at random intervals and is not reproduceable. The only thing I can thing of may be a faulty motherboard. I have tried a fresh install of Windows 7, reset BIOS to default. Has anyone got any other ideas? Could it be faulty RAM?

I could send to HP for repair (it is out of warranty) but as it happens infrequently I don't know if they will have much chance of finding the issue. Has anyone had a similar issue sorted by HP service in the past?

Any ideas appreciated.

Cheers, Matt.

Try a bios update, and installing the display drivers from the HP site (not the video manufacturer).

Also check the windows event log in case it says anything helpful.

If you have some compatible memory, try it.

Monitor & log temps as well to see if there is any relationship.

Have you run the built in tests, in the bios, for the ram and hdd?

Hi Folks, For those squillions of you following this, it is a faulty GPU on the motherboard. New motherboard ordered.... Cheers.

HP sorted that for you or how did you figure it out?

Hi,
I just wondered if replacing the motherboard resolved your issue, and what processor you had. I have recently had two of these fail with display issues - the laptop runs fine and is accessible over RDC, but has no output to the LCD, on-board external display ports or the docking station display ports. Both were out of warranty, about 18 months old, and never really been off the desktop.
I found that they both had Core i3 330M processors, and when I replaced the processor, they both started up again fine! The 330M processor is one of the first with an integrated GPU. I've referred this to my HP rep who is looking in to this to see if it's happened anywhere else.

Hey. Motherboard replacement sorted the issue. It was just out of warranty. Frustrated with HP's service on this one (or lack of).

This 6550b has integrated ATI graphics on the motherboard which had scorch marks around it. I had to purchase the replacement motherboard from Ebay as HP didn't or couldn't source one.

I still have the motherboard to abuse HP with....

Cheers, Matt.
