This was not meant to be a moan, but probably is going to be so sorry!

Long story short, been a contract Telecom Mobile customer for 14 years, been on a Gen-I plan for the last 4, things have changed and 2 of my mobiles are ready for a resign and the Gen-I plans don't suit.

Started looking at what was on offer from Telecom and can't say I am to impressed.

This is how it is...

Telecom offer:
$60 a month - 200 Anytime mins, 300 texts and 50mb data

2D Offer
$39 a month - 120 Anytime mins, 2500 texts and 100mb data + extra 100mins for life and 1gb data for a year.

Don't need (or expect) Telecom to match this letter for letter, but there a massive difference in offers here.

I have spoken to the Telecom call center and Gen-i, both seem to offer little help. Basically I have been told there is no room for negotiations. They don't have a retention team and this is the plan. Take it or leave it.

Even if they came to the party with some free "Pay Monthly Boosts" for extra texts or data, or even applied a monthly credit of $10 I would be happy. Hey, even throw in a free Tivo!

I am just surprised that there is no negotiation or discussions at all.

Yes, I know I can jump ship, but wanted to give Telecom the chance to resign my business. Never had a issue with them but it is getting past the point of changing providers for the sake of moving.

Anyone from Telecom here who can help?

I would suggest you call 0800 225598 ask for sales, explain the situation and then ask for retention team. You may end up being rather pleased with the results. With telecom you have to push a few buttons and speak to a few people to get anywhere. Strange setup but worth it usually in the end.

Sure, because I know now, where I want to use my phone is going to work. I can see it, moving providers and having no coverage in the places I go.

It is a fine line between what I have now and what I will pay for the assurances.

As Telecom bleeds more market share to 2D their prices will get cheaper.

Nope $11, he wanted a $10 discount. Without the discount its $21.

Re coverage: have you tried it?

What device are you using?

iphone 3Gs or 4 as you are on a gen-i plan?

while XT has a great network footprint, the combined 2degrees/Vodafone network is pretty close to XT as long as you have a UMTS900 capable phone.

I personally have a 2degrees iphone 3Gs (yes i am too poor to afford a new phone) and it doesn't support UMTS900 so when out of the main centres i am stuck on Vodafone 2G but when in a urban area i am either on the 2degrees or Vodafone UMTS2100 3G network.

if I had a UMTS900 device I would have 3G in 97% of the places kiwis live work and play, to use the common telco line.

Although there are now issues where 2degrees are implementing their own network in smallish towns and their mix of roaming/own cell sites are creating bad coverage issues.

I was in a similar position and the telecom guy just said that their network is superior so they can charge more.

I am using a HTC Desire. Had an iphone 3Gs but moved away from that.

2D would be my choice if I cannot get Telecom to come to the party.

Sounds a lot like the line I got today. Might have a better network, but I doubt it is a good as their pricing is trying to reflect.

I dont know if its worth considering, but vodafone have some very good business plans at the moment.

I am on a 400 mins plan with unlimited free calls to any nz landline, 1500 txts and 500mb of data for $80
They do have a cheaper tier to the set of plans of which i think i am on the middle of the range, which should be around the $60 mark

I am on the VF $45 smart plan, 100mins, 2500 texts, 250Mb data (plus initial 1G data extra per month which is still going after 7 months and looks like continuing) free calling between mobiles on our plan and one free common best mate number (main office). You may not get the 1G data anymore but worth a try.

Does the 2D data still work when you roam off their network onto Vodafone?
