Trying to port foward a port using a Telecom Thompson TG585 v8, I've added the port as shown in a number of youtube videos, which is the same way I did before referencing them.

Then using http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ to test if it was actually open,.. I get nothing, says it closed and the person who was trying to connect cant do so.

So I'm guessing its either one of two things, either the modem is FUBAR, or I'm being put through some sort of proxy and my IP is not what it appears on google ( tells you IP your ip if you ask it ;) )

Anyone have any experience with actually managing to port forward with one of these modems successfully ?

I have found this device rather flakey for port forwarding. I did load a firmware update (now on 8.2.7.8) as the standard version I got from Telecom would reboot with some specific traffic. Are you trying to use the GUI or telnet? You might get different results with telnet but I wouldn't guarantee you will get a usable forwarding outcome. Hopefully some others may have more reliable results and guidance.

That website doesnt seem to work for me either when I tried it a while back.
Use the portforward tool checker, I believe its free now.

I find if you are going to forward ports manually , then disable UPNP.
It seems to work for my friend whoom I did it for a couple of weeks ago :)

Here is all the info I have on them.
I'd consider getting a new modem though, I always had trouble with the thomson modems.

Just had a play using telnet (default password blank) to confirm NAPT can still work for me.

The following shows an active port forward:

There is an expanded list which can be easier found using the menu option to create the CLI syntax:

To add a mapping it is probably easier to use the menu interface as there are a lot of parameters - when on an item select using Enter and use cursor up|down to chose the option

I found the GUI too simplistic and it wasn't working as I expected with the CLI giving better flexibility. With my firmware I also had active mappings which the GUI didn't even report. If you are comfortable working at the CLI level then you might be able to avoid getting another router but I also agree with the OP that there are probably other routers out there that might suit you better.

For external port probing I use Gibson ShieldsUp. I hope you can get something working as these can be frustrating.
