Hi

Just joined to big pipe VDSL this week. Fibre is not available in my area.

This is a rental property. There is one jack point downstairs and one jack point upstairs. I do not have an alarm, phone line, or any other services that use the connection. I only have my draytek vigor 130 modem plugged into the phone jack. My PC is currently connected directly to the vigor modem.

My VDSL speed test is consistently
17.5 UP / 3.5 DOWN

The townhouse is probably built in the 80s. I assume that the likely reason I won't connect any faster is probably the internal wiring. I'd prefer not to get the rental property rewired, and it maybe pointless with fibre coming in the next 12-24 months anyway.

My question is:

If I changed to ADSL2+ would I likely get a similar speed. VDSL plan (20-60 DOWN) is $89/mo, ADSL plan (5-20 DOWN) is $79/mo. Am I paying $10 extra for no reason?

I'm getting your exact speed.

The way I see it my up speed is 4x faster. That is a lot to me. But only you can say whether it's worth $10 more.

You don't mention a master filter - do you have one?
What is your downstream attenuation?
This may give us some idea of why your VDSL speeds are borderline.

If you didn't get one installed, you probably don't have one. (1980's house)
Most people believe that a master filter should be mandatory for a VDSL install (but BigPipe do not provide them)

80s house will probably have old master and extension wiring too, which is really bad for *dsl.

Slow upload can also be street wiring. I get this on one of my connections:

B0 Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps):

3978

B0 Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps):

19320

And thats with the "best of a bad lot" of remaining pairs in the cables.

My other connection here gets

B0 Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps):

10342

B0 Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps):

21350

and being the same house, its the same distance from the cabinet.

Only internal wiring is a couple of RJ45 jacks straight on the end of the lead in cable.

Will I loose download speed if I switch from VDSL to ADSL2+ the ADSL plan states 5-20Mbps and I'm currently getting 17Mbps on VDSL.

Yes, as you will be losing upload speed and adsl will sync lower on the same line. How much you lose varys, but you are paying $10 for 4x more speed which (unless you never ever skype, send emails, upload photos or video etc) is well worth it.

Presumably you mean the other way round, which would match your line speeds.
