is anyone else getting disconnected all the time with Telecom? For the last 2 or 3 weeks our internet has just been pathetic, slows speeds and we seem to lose our ADSL atleast 3 times a day. I'm on the Go Large plan and its definately not the modem as our network (wireless and lan) always stays up but we lose ADSL. This is driving me mental and i'm this close to switching providers. If anyone else is having these problems let me know. cheers

Same here in Hastings.

Speeds are often good, but intermittently. 3 or 4 times a week that i notice, there is no adsl signal registering on my modem for up to 30mins.

I live in Wellington and on Telstra Cable, but have been getting intermittant (yet frustratingly frequent) disconnects.  This has been happening over the last 2 weeks or so.  Its usually just long enough to disconnect me from Ventrillo and WoW, but i can then reconnect again right away.

Considering the 2 different companies, and 2 different technologies, i dont really see how it could be related, but thought it was worth mentioning.

Then there is Telstras ABYSSMAL customer service .. But thats a different story all together and getting OT ;-)

If your modem is reporting no ADSL signal then changing plans or ISP will not fix it as unless your exchange has been LLU and you select an ISP with their own DSLAM in your local exchange then all ADSL goes through Telecoms hardware that generates the DSL signals, not your ISP.

Tony, if you have regular 30min dropouts of DSL signals then I would be ringing Telecom for an explanation, that is not the service one should expect, and definitely not the kind of service the gear has been designed to deliver.

Frequent disconnects can be caused by so many different things.  Is it adsl thats dropping off or is it PPP thats dropping off? What is the line attenuation and SNR being reported on your modem? Do you have a hardwired splitter or are you using line filters? Do you have sky digital or a monitored alarm plugged into the phone line?
If you havent already done so I would be asking xtra to place a 24h analyzer on your line to try and determine where the disconnects are coming from.  They do require appropriate interpretation of the results but can generally identify potential issues.
Unless you are getting PPP disconnects (i.e. the dsl light stays on all the time) I highly doubt the Go Large plan is the culprit as the dsl profiles are independent of the plan you are on, the plan affects what family of profiles you have only.  The dsl profile options are constant over all plans.

i already talked to telecom and set up a 48 hour monitoring period. we'll see if they can work out what the problem is, as for your questions...

i don't have sky or saturn, don't have a monitored alarm, it is the adsl light as i don't think we have a ppp light on our dlink modem, if we do its staying on, the splitters were installed into the phone jacks by the telecom serviceman, and as for attenuation and SNR i have no idea how to measure those so feel free to enlighten me...

Log on to router (use ipconfig /all from shell prompt, default gateway address on your lan connection is router's ip address) using web browser to get noise margins and attenuation figures.

So the dsl light turns off when you have lost your connection? If so then that indicates it is the actual dsl that is dropping, sometimes your dsl light can stay on but PPP drops which has exactly the same symptoms - unable to browse.
As for Attenuation and SNR, these should be displayed on your modems status page.  For SNR the higher it is the better (anything greater than 12-13 is considered good) and for attenuation the lower it is the better (anything over 80-90dB is borderline), this is generally determined by your distance from the exchange and quality/guage of the copper line coming from the DSLAM.  The SNR generally indicates how reliable/stable your connection will be (if it changes regularly then there is something wrong, possibly interference, cpe issue or intermittent contact in the copper wiring due to corrosion or bad connections.  This should be picked up in the analyzer if it is the case) and the attenuation generally indicates what sort of connect rate you will get, again this should remain fairly static.

Hope this helps.

lol yea i know how to log onto a router, not that n00bish. as for the attenuation and SNR figures... those downstream speeds r bs tho, i have never once got anywhere near those speeds, in the last few months my highest peak would be about 150kbps.

Next check the log for any loss of signal indication.

My guess is that these entries are more recent as router NOT syncing to time server. Delete and monitor from now as reference. From my experience once Dlinks disconnect that they won't connect automatically unless rebooted in which case the log is cleared.

you're right, this is my 3rd dlink router and whenever the net goes down you either have to reboot through the software or restart it manually, they never fix themselves. you'll be right about the time lapse with the log coz i will have reset the net atleast 25 times since early january. also what am i looking for in the log? the log seems to only cover a few hours and all its got is "frag at proto 17" and the occasional "frag at proto 6" also these frags seem to happen very frequently, like between 10 secs and a minute.

ok i reset my log and monitored it until it reached its max which is 25 pages (only took about an hour or 2). near the end of the log my internet died for about 20 mins before it worked again. this is the log for when it crashed... (most of the pages were filled with the proto 17 message and occasionally i'd get about 7 or 8 of those " get 0xF at Addr 0xA30085B0" but the net went down when those DSL sinc messages started)
