Hello,

Does anyone have any experience with using a Google WiFi with a Spark fibre connection?

First question: Does the Google Wifi work with a Spark fibre connection?

Second question: If so, can it be connected straight to the ONT?

Third question: If so, how do I set that up?

Thanks.

I think Spark fibre requires VLAN 10 tagging on the WAN interface of the connecting router, and Google Wifi doesn't support VLAN tagging from memory (anyone please correct me if I am wrong) so cannot be used with Spark fibre.

My understanding from when I recently researched these mesh options was that Google WiFi can't do the VLAN requirement for most ISPs - hence my selection of the TPLink Deco system, which can - and which I've successfully plugged straight into the ONT for Slingshot UFB.

But, I don't think Spark needs the VLAN set - in which case, you should be OK with the Google kit

I posted at the same time as the poster above, who may be correct that Spark does need the VLAN set.

The TPLink kit works well if that's any help

What? Doesn't Spark SELL the Google Wifi? Of course that it will work with spark.

Hmm, I'm not having any luck connecting via the ONT or another router.

I thought it would at least work via another router, I'm sure I've seen others in the forums say they have that working.

I'll keep trying.

After hard resetting the Google WiFi and soft resetting everything else for the thousandth time it's working via the existing router.

I suspect you're right about Spark needing VLAN 10 tagging, so via the ONT is out for now I guess.

Thanks guys.

There's a different between it working as as AP and as a router - slingshot had a promotion on the latter with a mesh system but with these systems you don't get all the functionality if they're sitting behind another router.

I have no idea why Spark sells the Google WiFi given you can't use it as a router, also as a whole the Google WiFi is quite underpowered.

If you've just bought this then consider returning it in favour for a unit that can do VLAN 10 (eg - the Ubiquiti AmpliFi).

only reason your able to view that page is becaues you are direct linking to it.

I'll have the folk update that link.

To use the Google Wifi on Spark, it needs to go behind your HG659b.

this is because it does need the vlan 10.

It's not a supported device.

It's just like we sell chormecasts or tvs with devices... These are unsupported items, normally on IFP.

The wanganui spark store still has a big ad on the back wall about the google wifi. That's how I initially knew.

I can only comment on the online experience, I'm very distant from stores.

Stores sell alot of products that aren't supported.
