Bizarre

The courier just delivered a parcel from Telecom

It is a "Business Broadband Kit - Wireless Networking Gateway" and appears to contain a 2701HGN-W whatever that is

We didnt ask for it

There is no covering letter or accompanying documentation

The list of supported software does not include Server 2003, which is what we currently run

We currently have a Nokia M1122 ADSL router and separate DLink wireless unit - all of which has taken a while to configure, but works well.

Is there any advantage (or need) to switch?

I'm puzzled....

We just got one as well. It's because the Telecom Business plan your on has change so this is a freebee..

if you recently switched to one of the business plans you will automatically get this for free. You don't have to use it.

If you don't want it sell it on trademe.

lol, I noticed that too. I am willing to give him benefit of the doubt that it was a simple typo because he used the correct name in the main post.

That's because we are now filtering the main posts. We will start to filter the subject too. The moderators asked for the filter - I wanted just to reject the posts.

So be warned. Another one and the thread is locked and bans will go out. People should now better, seeing they have been here long enough to know our policies.

you will get that router for free but you will be in 24month contract
otherwise you have to pay for it

If you have moved to a new Business plan and your location supports ADSL2+ then I think you will find your nokia M1122 will not support 2+. I dont think support for Server 2003 is relavent to your ADSL connection.

So what is the difference between ADSL and ADSL2+ ?

I can well understand that the old Nokia would not support 2+, but why would we want to change?

I'm concerned that:

A: if we dont change the hardware our connection will break

B: that there is a significant effort required in changing and reconfiguring

C: that reconfiguration cant be done from our server - the only box that communicates with the router at present.

It ain't broke - I'd prefer not to have to fix it....

You are quite right, if it aint broke then dont fix it. ADSL2+ can go upto 24Mb/s depending on how far you are from the exchange, compared to 8Mb/s on ADSL1.

I presume you have a VPN or some such arrangment running for you to be concerned with configurations, and thats a reasonable reason, however typically its not that hard to configure.

It will support windows server 2003, same as it would support any other ethernet modem (not using usb connection). You also don't need to use the disk they give you either, you can usually manually set it up through the web interface.

More than one, I'm afraid - and some are "mission critical" - plus there is some fancy NAT and firewalling going down.

On asking around I've found that while I was on holiday (note to self: dont do that again) our receptionist got a call from someone at Telecom, who suggested a plan change would save us money and said they would send "details".

Looks like this might be the "details"

I do hope we haven't just been signed up for a 24 month plan as we were planning on dropping Telecom as our ISP :(

Yes, it is a 24 month fixed contract :(

But at least it looks like three month savings in plan charges will cover the early disconnect fee :)

You know, a simple covering letter in the package would have gone a long way to explaining all this
