Hi, I'm looking for a new Telecom cellphone, mostly for sending text messages and making calls. I'd also like a good organiser, and one with a semi-decent camera.

I was looking at the Samsung W531 but that seems to be going out of production, only available from Telecom now. My budget is $2-300 or so.

If anyone can make some recommendations, that'd be much appreciated :)

Best deals this month are the samsung envy for $199 normally $399 mp3 photo video slim clam style phone 1.3 megapixel camera and removable sd card.......or the nokia 6275$249 normally $499 mp3 photo video bar style phone with a 2 megapixel camera and removable sd card optional...........

only issue is if you are a mutitap texter rather than a predictive texter when you space you have to hit the space bar twice on the envy otherwise very user friendly. The nokia seems to have quite small writing.....

I know that you believe that you understand what you think i said, but i am not sure you realise that what you heard is not what i meant!

i quite like the nokia, just got it the other day and activated, so time will tell but first impression is a nice phone, tiny and screen's brighter than my jasjam, also the battery live seems to be good i have not used it yet as much as i would have liked.

I would definitely recommend the Nokia 6275. This phone has good features and is easy to use as with most Nokia's. It first came out at $699 so the current price of $249 is sharp. I have not owned this phone myself however some of my work colleagues have the phone and have had a play round with it on many occasions and like it.

It had a few issues with sending picture messages when it was first available a couple of years ago but my workmates reckon its all good now.

Agreed, The Nokia 6275 is a great phone and would suit your organiser and photo camera requirements

2MP camera (highest quality currently available from Telecom)
Software is also included to sync with your outlook if you wanted this for your organiser as well

not to mention an mp3 player with external memory slot and a gps plotter as standard as well

Agreed re: the 6275. I am currently using one as my primary phone, and even though its an old model, it kicks butt 8 ways from Sunday over anything else in that price range... (on Telecom)

If you want an organiser go with the Nokia. It can synch with Outlook for contacts, calender and notes (to the limit of the memory)
Very small text though so is a 'young' persons phone...sigh.
Can synch via bluetooth and the Nokia suite software is a free download if it isn't in the box on disk.

The only downside I see is having to pay extra for a data cable, which should come standard in the box!

What is the battery life like on these mobiles?

I currently have a w531, But would like a candybar style phone

hello there i have the samsung w531 and i find that text messaging on it's not very good you can write a text and if you receive a text while you are writeing one it lose's it. and when you are transmiting or sending the text and someone texts you it wont send you have to resend it the prodicive text on it sucks becos you cant add words to the word directory. and if say someone texts you and asks for someones number you cant insert the number in to the message. like pasteing numbers from your contacts go with the nokia bra

Yeah well, I guess it should have come standard, but you can pick one up on Trade Me for under $20.00 including shipping.

Why not use bluetooth rather than a cable. If you don't have bluetooth on board buy a bluetooth dongle. Works well to synch with Nokia and means you still have connectivity if you change to a different phone. Almost all phones are supporting bluetooth now.

go on to trademe and search for some good phone with cheap price.

some PDA phone is also very good and cheap on trademe. such as Palm Treo 700, Okta Touch, etc. they are great for txting, but they must be used on a monthly plan, with minimum about 20 to 30 dollars monthly.

on prepay, i will suggest the same phone that others have mentioned , the nokia one, or the Okta Agent.

The OP did not discuss roamiing... And CDMA is not "being phased out worldwide". In Australia Telstra decided to move to WCDMA/HSDPA, a move now being followed by Telecom New Zealand. But there are other operators deploying CDMA, and it is still a large portion of the USA/Canada/Mexico with presence in the South American and Indian markets.

I am not going into the merit of which technology is best - only commenting on your remark of it being phased out.

Please keep on topic otherwise this can go a long way...
