Hello,

Some months back my very elderly neighbors were migrated onto rural wireless when copper in the area was turned off. They have a Spark Smart Modem 2 with the Spark provided '0812' dual handset phone connected to it. UFB not possible where we are. Their internet is fine. They had to get an antenna on the roof to get better reception and were getting 8Mbit down on speed tests and my mtrs were running fine for the time I was there and able to observe their phone issues.

They asked me over because their phone had lost dial tone entirely, but also because they have been plagued by phone issues ever since they were cut over. They have tried to work with Spark 5 times to solve this, including even going into a store once to be told "please go home and call us for help", which I can understand as they were probably speaking to some poor sales rep in a mall, but this really upset them when the reason they went in is because they couldn't make calls so couldn't call spark. Restarting the modem fixed the outgoing call issue: they have dial tone and can make calls again now, but receiving calls is still a problem. The isolation testing we did makes me suspect this is a porting issue when moved from Spark copper to wireless.

Calling from 2degrees mobile: rings endlessly and does not ring on their handset

Calling from Spark mobile: 5 beeps 'busy signal' before cutting off. Does not ring on their handset

Calling from a Spark landline number still on copper goes through successfully and they're able to answer and have a normal conversation

So I suspect this rules out any issue with the CPE - handset or otherwise - though they tell me this is the second modem and phone they have tried anyway. Is there anyone here from Spark who could please double check all this and/or work with me directly to try and fix this for them? This is a couple in their 80s who live rurally, can't really use a cellphone and have paid money for new hardware for a migration that was forced upon them by the termination of the copper service and wasn't ever working properly from day one. They're extremely isolated as a result of this issue. Their Spark number is available to tagged Spark staff only.

Thanks.

Please only give the phone or account number to someone identified by Geekzone as officially representing Spark.

It seems as though there is a provisioning error at the Spark end. Should be easy enough for the right person at the right support level to rectify.

That's probably not helpful and best left aside until the immediate problem is resolved.

Thanks. Chorus availability checker tells me dsl is still available here so I guess something along those lines did happen. They'll be stoked if we can just get it working as is.

Copper should still be available, just Spark are choosing not to offer the service. There are other providers that are still happy to offer copper landlines. Hopefully the issue will get resolved, but keep the copper in mind as an option should you need it.

I work at Chorus and Spark is my direct customer. Tomorrow morning I will flag this post with my contact at Spark who works directly in this field (Copper Withdrawal and PSTN Shutdown). If I need further details I will reach out to the OP and can put them in direct contact with my contact at Spark if required.

First of all - Copper can NOT be withdrawn in areas with no Fibre, the CWC (Copper Withdrawal Code) prohibits this.

I think this elderly couple got confused between the NEAX PSTN shutdown and copper withdrawal.

While Chorus is required by the CWC to provide cooper. Retail service providers get to make their own decisions if they wish to utilize this or withdraw service.

Below is an example of a Spark letter sent to an end user about the PSTN migration in an area where there isn't sufficient mobile coverage to provide voice over wireless.

However, they are forcing customers where they can move to wireless (or to move to another provider). This is because they can lower their input costs by not paying Chorus.

I highly doubt they would have been told it was a "copper shutdown" but rather a PSTN shutdown. The commerce commission in recent years has reigned in this misinformation.

It also should be noted (as in the example of the above letter) in non-fibre areas copper-based Voice services are still available from Chorus even after the NEAXs have been decommissioned. It is just a matter of if your RSP is willing to support it, which in the case of Spark appears to depend on if they are able to provide the service over wireless or not.
