FineWine:

It is an Edimax EX-3305P fast Ethernet Desktop Switch and you are correct it is limited to 100Mb.  As I said it has never interfered with our viewing experience.

Perfectly adequate for streaming video - you won't have a problem. It's just a bottleneck for a speedtest though. If you want to speedtest from the ATV, you need to temporarily bypass this switch. Plug the ATV directly to the router instead of through that switch.

100Mbit will be fine for streaming, but your internet connection is only going to show as fast as the slowest part of the chain. Be it WiFi or your 100Mbit switch.

Try plug the Apple TV directly into the router and see what the speedtest result is.

Your 8 year old iMac is probably not fast enough to do a full 1gbps (1000mbit) speedtest either.

Much like if you've got nothing nice to say, maybe try the same if you've got nothing helpful to add?

Thanks guys, great info. I might look at upgrading to a gigabit switch at a later date.

Anyway back to why myself and others are getting poor speed test results on our home WiFi networks via Spark Smart Modem 1st & 2nd gen whilst the Ethernet test results are all within acceptable tolerances.

In my own case the modem is virtually in the centre of my ground storey only 140sqm wooden frame fibre board house on a 5Ghz home network. Whether I connect our iPhones or iPads via iMac 5Ghz AirPort Time Capsule or I connect via the Spark Smart Modem I get poor speeds. My iMac is connected directly to the modem via Ethernet.

So clearly there is problem.

Or maybe you've discovered normal behaviour.

WiFi is always going to be slower than Ethernet.

Say you could get the full 1000/500 over WiFi (you never will), what difference do you think that would make to your day to day usage of the internet? Is it worth worrying about?

@FineWine, perhaps start a new thread with all the details of the problem rather going too far OT here.

On the Fibre Order Tracker page in MySpark, is there meant to be anything under it? As Max Fibre was ordered online on the evening of the 10th or 11th and looking today, the only thing written there is this -

View Orders

You don’t have any orders to display. If you recently placed an order it can take up to four hours to display.

Yet the other day, an email came through that said this -

Thanks for ordering Spark Fibre! There's an existing Fibre connection at your home, so unless you've requested for a technician to visit, you should be connected within 2-5 working days.If you've let us know you need a technician, you'll receive confirmation of your appointment soon

I was on Unplan 100 and moved to fibre max. I ordered on the 14th and it was completed on the 18th.

Just moved from Vodafone to the new Spark fibre Unlimited Plan (with Landline).  I have a selection of Vodafone modems from over the years.  Latest is the Vodafone UltraHub however I couldn't get this working (wouldn't change to PPPoE, it kept on going back to IPoE).  I then used an old Vodafone HG659b and manually modified the WAN settings and got a connection.

Question is - should the UltraHub work and any tricks.

Of course the phone is not working, no doubt need to call Spark to get the VoIP settings.

Spark use the ONT for phone, not the router. The Ultra Hub is pretty locked down. Not sure if you can change the WAN settings or not.

Just FYI, if you’re switching from Unplan to one of the new plans, prepare for some bill shock. My normal monthly bill was $104 and after switching to the new fibre max plan I got a bill for $245. This is because Unplan was charged in arrears, whereas the new plan is billed in advance. This article explains it but just a heads-up: https://www.spark.co.nz/unplanbillchanges/?utm_source=spark&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=sparkbill

I've just switch to the  new plan.  Looks like my secondary number has changed to a new one.  Not  a biggy at present.  Not sure if Netflix has transitioned across.  Will have to wait and see after Oct 25 when the plan kicks in.
