MaxineN:

Yes

I use an ASUS AX3000.

PPPoE Vlan 10

No issues at all.

Thx, I'll try this after I've been connected.

I thought Skinny didn’t use VLAN tagging?

It seems to use vlan 10, for fibre at least ( It is set to 10 in the skinny modem and I'm just copying that).

But, I can't connect because pppoe keeps failing . . . it looks like skinny have set a pppoe user id and password.... i can see the user id in the skinny modem interface, but the password is blanked out.

I don't think it actually matters.

As long as there is something in both the username and password fields, should be good to go. No specific ones needed.

This is what the skinny modem page says...

Summary

Status:             Enabled

802.1Q Enable: No

VLAN ID:          10

Protocol:           PPPoE

Internet:          Y

802.1Q is set to "N", does that mean vlan id is irrelevant?

That’s my assumption, yes.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

So, I got my fritzbox 7590 working on skinny now ...vlan must be disabled, enter the user id as the one from the skinny modem wan page, password can be anything.  (not sure if user/password is important).

Don't need VLAN 10, same settings as Bigpipe. My ERL switched over from Bigpipe to Skinny without needing to change any settings.

gasman:

I just chatted with their online support and they said that the Flexi modem/router is only being used for their 4G broadband customers. Might have to go and buy a better one to use in place of their standard Huawei one.

The supplied router is an Arcadyan model, not a Huawei one.

While the VLAN is set to 10, tagging is off: you can see this if you go to edit the PVC.

You need PPPoE with a username and password set (anything without special characters should work) and VLAN tagging turned off. I was using the Stuff ASUS router until the Skinny one arrived, with PPPoE user/pass as skinny/skinny and VLAN turned off (the setting is under 'IPTV' for some reason, and needs to be set to 'none' - picking 'custom' with an empty VLAN number doesn't work).

Just made the switch over the weekend, went off pretty well I think, despite leaving a lot of room for error.

I specified the 27th as my connection date, since that was the last day of my billing cycle with 2d. What I didn't click onto was that I would going away the day before, so my first job on arriving home would be to re-config for Skinny and hope for the best.

The 27th rolls around and I get an email from 2d saying that they have processed the disconnection... but not a peep from Skinny.

And nothing the day after either... and still no word on when my unwanted Skinny provided router would ship to boot...

So I roll in on Sunday night, exhausted from the road and fearing the worst case scenario of being disconnected without being reconnected... but I updated the settings using BigPipe's config as per the previous comment, restarted the ER4 and bam! Holy mother of connectivity, we have a flashing green light!

I only just got a message today saying my Skinny router was shipping, so good thing I wasn't depending on that, eh?

As a side note; mine definitely didn't work with my 2d config with VLAN 10. After I removed the vif10 interface and created a pppoe interface on eth0, it worked a charm.

https://support.skinny.co.nz/article/skinny-unlimited-broadband-faqs-408.html

Can I use my own modem?
No. To snap up the great Skinny Unlimited Broadband offer, you’ll need to purchase the super-speedy Skinny Smart Modem. This modem has been set up specifically to make the most of the network so you get the best speeds possible.

I wonder why they do this, usually ISP's will allow 3rd party 'modems'. They just say they will not support them, fair enough.

Does anyone use a 3rd party modem with Skinny?

One would think a better answer to "Can I use my own modem?" would be "You sure can, but note we cannot provide support for modems other than those supplied by Skinny".

I use a Linksys router, works fine.

@ShinyChrome did you had to provide a 30 days notice in advance if you were already out of your contract period with them to not be charged a month in advance fees?

Do whatever you want to do man.

I am out of contract and TBH I haven't seen anything to that effect in their terms and conditions ; technically as per section 18a, I shouldn't be charged anything further as I cancelled before (technically on) the next billing due date. Which I also confirmed in the week leading up with a phone call to 2D CS.

However, they have still charged me nonetheless, so thats where it gets tricky. I got stuck on hold tonight with them, so will chase them up again tomorrow.

Two weeks past my connection date, still waiting for internet 😢. Just a bit unlucky really (bit of an odd situation property wise) but support from Skinny has been so-so at best. The most helpful form of support has been live chat. Phone calls typically end with a "please wait for an email from the technical staff", and replies from 'tech staff' usually take 3-5 days (that's if I'm lucky to get a reply). Seems like a tug-of-war between Tuatahi First Fibre and Skinny, with neither of them giving me a decent answer. Tuatahi isn't seeing a fault in the line and Skinny forgets I'm here until I call again for an update.

Supposed to get a call from a Skinny manager within the next 48 hrs. We'll see.

LAN 2 & POWER = solid green
PON = flashing green
Skinny Modem = red
Me = spending a lot of money on mobile data

Hopefully gets sorted this week🤞
