las2003:  As we were ablready with telecom and had NO contract with our existing mobile we were a bit reluctant to go onto a contract.  However to purchase the phone we wanted (builders one which is supposedly unbreakable) we had to go onto a 12mth contract.

you were either misinformed by the salesperson or misunderstood the salesperson.

All the XT phones are available on an open term contract (i.e. no minimum period)

Of coruse you would have to pay full price if you go for that option,  instead of having it subsidised by XT, but that is the way it has always worked all over the world.

is the phone you have I presume?  On an open term contract it would be $399

Yes XT's name has been insanely tarnished.

To remedy it,

-Avoid the Net filtering thing. You already lost the Cellphone market don't lose your Broadband customers next.

It seems Telecom is running a "customer summit" today - didn't know about it until 15 minutes before it started. One of the questions on said summit is exactly what I asked for the first time here on the 21st February - "what would you think Telecom should do?"

So it seems the question is pretty much still current. Any other takes on this topic?

I don't know if this has been discussed already, but I noticed when looking at mailers from the likes of DSE, Noel Leeming, etc that the Telecom phones are just being advertised as "telecom" i.e no mention of XT anywhere, so wondering if Telecom is actually dropping the XT brand?

Doubt it, they've invested a fair amount of money into it.

Their only investment really has been to pay a brit crash test dummy to blab about it. Well needs a re-launch with a different brand that wont get laughed at.

I think it's been mentioned before on this thread but cap based pricing like they do in Australia seems like a smart move to me.

These days people want flexability so it's hard for telco's to design plans that are right for everyone, that's where caps are excellent because you buy in at a cap which allows you to use your credit in any way you like eg. international calls, data etc.

It would be a smart way to go in my opinion.

I agree with the cap based pricing idea. Telecom was on the right track with their extra credit top up e.g. the extra $5/$12/$20 from their top up could be used for voice/text etc, which is quite appealing. Maybe if they continued along the same lines, but combine it with some On Account plans.

I think changing some of their pricing/account plans would help, especially if they have good voice+text+data plans.
