That's nice to see. I was getting so angry seeing the comments on Spark's status on facebook. I realise changing your DNS is not simple for some but holy balls some people were just plain rude.

I feel sorry for the engineers, what a cr4p thing to happen on a weekend!!

You're not wrong, and thanks - myself and quite a few others probably did 36 hours this weekend...

BTW, From our side, the DNS still looks good...

And in very brief response to some of the other comments, the DNS infrastructure is distributed, with load balanced instances in different geographic locations. Each instance is connected to the core network by 2 different paths and each DNS server is connected to the redundant switch (and router) infrastructure by multiple bonded GigE interfaces.

I swear that from some of the comments some people think we just have an old 386 laptop hanging off a jetstart connection doing DNS :-)

Minecraft - that explains it, kids these days have not been bought up without the internet like many others were so possibly a 12 year old having a temper tantrum not being able to play his precious Minecraft.

The nerve! it is at least a Pentium 75 running Slackware Linux! ;-)

All jokes aside - it is amazing how irrational people can behave. I work in the service industry and telling a customer that we've run out of something or that they have to wait for something to be cooked fresh the reaction I receive from them is as though I had just punched their mother. Honestly, it goes back to what I've said - every person should do at least 5 years working in fast food full time dealing with the public then only once they've reached hourly manager they can then escape the many rings of hell and get another job.

When it comes to IT (something I did in my past life) one of those situations where no one appreciates what you do until things turn to crap and then suddenly you end up becoming the punching bag for their anger :-(

This might be off topic given it seems to have been resolved for everyone else, but I'm still having some lingering issues...
I'm using a RTA1025W - ancient but has been solid as - and Win 7/8 desktop/laptops.
I still need to set DNS to 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 in the IPv4 properties to get internet - if I set to obtain DNS automatically as I did up until the recent problems, I get absolutely no internet, local or international.
At one point I did set DNS in the router to 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4, but have since changed that back to automatic as previously.
Have restarted everything multiple times.
Appreciate any thoughts on this.

PS - bizarrely the router reports the following in the current status:

Primary DNS server

122.56.237.1

Secondary DNS server

210.55.111.1

Well done to the Spark engineers. Engineers get it pretty hard sometimes, in one of those jobs where they are always fixing problems. Its like no one talks to you unless there is a problem. And then if you are in a role where you are designing the infrastructure then you also run the risk of being the fall guy for all the business big wigs who don't understand how the technology works. But from reading these posts it does sound like Spark is operating with more communication than it used to back in the day. I actually working for Telecom back when broadband was first being rolled out as jetstart, and it seemed then like there was such poor communication between the marketing and infrastructure. I think the actual product can be neglected while the focus goes towards fancy and nice marketing plans. I know that the old Telecom did have a culture like this. But in today's world people know more than they did back then and can be trusted to understand that new technology can fail sometimes, as such I think they have more respect for a company when they are honest about the issues.
I mean people get angry when things go wrong or mistakes are made, but what is worse is when a company try to gloss over it, or pass the blame. Like I am so glad that Apple has made a comment regarding there security of iCloud, I was kind of worried they were going to try and blame it on the hackers, and not take ownership of the issue. Like here, Spark could say, its all the hackers fault. Or they could take ownership of the issue, and inform us of improvements they have made. Making them look like a progressive and constantly improving company.
Its sort of like that comment of how people think Spark is running their DNS on a single 386 machine. And in a way people do think like this because Telecom has seemed so secret in the past regarding their technologies with some kind of fear that its better not to tell people because they won't understand. But if you look at all the biggest tech companies, facebook, instagram, snapchat, they are all posting articles on their back end technologies, because the geeks do understand it, enjoy reading it, and it actually gives them more confidence in the companies. So I really hope that Spark use this outage as a opportunity, rather than some black mark they just try to hide away and hope people will forget.

Hi there - Carrying on from the PMs...

It's clear that your computer can see and use the Spark DNS servers correctly (everyone else - we covered that in a PM)... So if you're having absolutely no connectivity with the DNS servers set to automatic in the router and with your PCs set to get IP addressing info over DHCP (It might be called 'Automatic') , then it sounds like something funny with your LAN or PC.

From your PC, with all the DNS settings set to Auto, try the following.

ping 8.8.8.8

If you get responses, that means you can see the internet at the IP level.

Now try testing name resolution

C:\Users\Neil>nslookup
Default Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.199.243

> tired.com
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.199.243

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: tired.com
Address: 204.197.218.143

That tests the name resolution without specifically telling the operating system what name server to use, it will use whatever's been automatically assigned.

If that works, then you can see the Internet, and your automatically assigned name server is working.

If you haven't already, try rebooting both your router and your PC at the same time in that order.. (both off, router on, wait a minute or so, then PC on)

Let us know what happens.

I have the exact same problem as above. I also have a RTA1025W and unless I set my DNS to 8.8.8.8 I cannot use the internet. If I set it to automatically set DNS settings, it will not let me search up any websites although on the DSL page of the modem page it says it is connected to the internet. My line speed on my modem settings is also significantly slower than normal. Line sync shows 4mb down when I usually get 13mb down. Also no wifi devices at my house work through my router. It just times out. I dont know how to change DNS to 8.8.8.8 on my mobile devices.

DNS issue is likely related.

if your line speeds have changed that much, likely that is an unrelated issue.

log fault with your isp.
