Hey has anyone tryed downloading the telecom java games for the 6255??? I thought to give the 3D chess a go but it comes up as "Failed" when downloading. And when you download again it asks if you would like to over write, but its not in the menus any where

Any ideas???

I downloaded the non-3D chess not long ago with no problems whatsoever and have installed an irc client also from the web no troubles either. But last night when I was trying to download an SSH client it did exactly what you described... I'm not sure what has changed since then - I have plenty of free space...

r0bbie, if you got a failed download from the "Download Java Games" option in the XMS menu, call the help desk and make sure you get a refund (if indeed you were billed)... they will be able to alert the right people if there are any problems with a specific game)... are you looking in the main menu for your download?

i.e. Menu>Extras>Games

or

Menu>Extras>Collection

Damo-K, not sure if you'll be able to use an ssh client as you may find the ports are blocked at the network level. Also, if you download content that is not supplied via the XMS menu, Telecom can't make any garentees about whether or not it'll work as they didn't supply it! In sayi8ng that, if managed to get an irc client up and running, you may be sweet!

Got the IRC client working through it's HTTP gateway method of connecting. The other option, sockets doesn't work which could well be because of your suggestion that they block ports (but on the cellular network, why?). The SSH client has no option of connection method so I assume it'll be sockets but I can't even try that until I get it downloaded.

Taniwha - MIDPssh and wlirc are what you are interested in.

Damo-K, I suspect the ports are blocked as this is not just the network for cellular voice, sms, wap etc, but also used for data... don't want people with melware on their PDA's to end up with massive bills!

There could be other reasons, but I'd guess this is probably one of the main ones...

Damok - got any hints on how to install it? I don't have MS bluetooth, just regular bluetooth so the nokia software won't talk to my phone :-(

(ms bluetooth won't do audio profile, so i'm stuck with what i got)

Blocked ports theory is interesting. i'm using a lot of strange ports from my PDA , through my 6255 .. never hit any blocked ones before.

Malware using 22? I don't want start a debate but it's not up to a network to decide what should be blocked if someone pays for a service. The only justifiable port is 25. Chances are it is just no socket support which is the case with many phones at the moment. Unless someone official says otherwise that is what I will go with (when I said cellular network I meant all services that were part of it too)

Taniwha, search up the sites on your computer, find the wap address/direct address and go from there. I also found that in the menu of the 6255 browser you can type in the URL directly which I'm impressed with because I've found with many of the Telecom phones, the only way to go to a url is via the search menu from the homepage.

kinda hoping not to have to download it on the handset, cos that's traffic to pay for.

btw: port 22 isn't blocked when connected via #777 - i've got ssh2 on the palm working - might have more to do with connection methods. I can see the wap side being a little more locked down than data.

but it's all a bit of a black box from here.

Has there been any update on the status of the 6255. I'm kinda getting desperate!

While I really want to move from Vodafone from the data services and CDMA the choice of handsets is depressing.....

I've been without a working phone(a good one anyway - Nokia 1100 yuck!!) for 2 weeks now waiting for the 6255 to come back into stock after being told " sure we can get you two for tomorrow"

The 5600 didn't help either, no data, no pc sync software capable of interfacing with Outlook, no BT (Why didn't you partner with Verizon - jeez Telecom!!!).

Oh well, maybe I just stay on the dark side and nuke my head for a while long - heck you only live once and winter may not be the best time to get rid of the heater next to my ear.

OK, starting to loose it - any word out there at all?

Cheers

Thanks for that disenchanted ...

I must try to resist run down to the Telecom store at 9am tomorrow... maybe 9:30 is OK?

Actually I think I'll have to take a sedative as I'm about thisssss close to being banned from at least 3 dealers for constantly asking after the 6255.

The real problem is that Telecom don't appear to be telling the dealers anything.... Thank goodness for geekzone..

Cheers

Yeah. A lot of dealers seem to get left in the cold. The smart ones are here on Geekzone though.

Go tell your friends. Special offer: For every 10 friends you refer to Geekzone this month, there will be 10 more people you know joining in :-)

I wouldnt run str8 to a dealer. Even -if- it is available, many dealers may not have got orders in in time (seeing as they didnt know).

Best ring first.

I hope when the Nokia 6638 comes out a few test models will be available for us to test. So we could find the bugs for these guys. This power off bug on the 6255 and other firmware bugs would of been found by us!!!

I wouldnt mind having a buggy phone if we had access to firmware updates
