mxpress: Hi Doozy. Glad to see some one from Telecom here. I was on Go large from the start to the finish and then changed to big time when it was offered. I was delighted at first but since about the middle of last week it has turned to total rubbish. EVERYTHING is slow. Some pages won't even display, buffering galore on streaming video (and radio). Downloads and virus updates now take forever. Why has it suddenly turned to crap? Is there a problem some where or has the tap been just about fully closed? Go large was honestly better than this and with all the hype about ADSL2 and me being close to a new cabinet, I was expecting far better than this.

If you reread his comment he doesnt say anything about torrents.
In general everything is about as slow as you.
10kbs is not reasonable.
Im glad you got fined for go large.

Big Waste of Time is exactly that, we pay for broadband not dial up.

tardtasticx: Me and my mate were seriously so bored last night, we started a download of a torrent, and it crawled at 10kb/s most of the night, got to a high of 20. we started at 1am. when 2am came around, the minute it hit on the clock, speeds rocketed up. right from 10 allthe way up to 1mb/s. finished in no time. now its peak time. its slow again. ugh

I don't think doozy is the enemy either !
Its actually a refreshing change to have someone from telecom trying to help that does have access to the backroom to be able to fix it when you do have problems !

Why is TVNZ OnDemand un-usable? Its a NZ site so it should be faster to use. By the time the advert loads in the beginning (funny enough the advert is for Orcon. lol) loads and has finished playing, I could have watched the first half of the show.

Because Telecom wont peer with WIX/APE, and thus you are actually watching a US based cache of the TVNZ content. It's been discussed before.

Personally I'm not talking about torrents, I dont think anyone is seriously suggesting that you allow fullspeed torrenting during peak hour.. But I think we would like to see the heavy shaping restricted to p2p only during peak hours, and enough bandwidth in the pool that websurfing, gaming, etc is not noticably slowed during peak.

I'd grumbled a bit about the plan, and I think ti could be better, but I'm still on it after several months, and have no plans to switch anytime soon. I think you are doing a reasonably good job with it, I just wish a few things could be tweaked a bit more.. Personally I'd reallly love to see the 40-50ms latency increase I see in international gaming duruing peak hours go away. :-)

Telecom don't peer at the CityLink run APE/WIX and CityLink don't interconnect with Telecom.

Largest local content provider and largest local ISP audience, sigh...

try using bywifi video accelerator for tvnz on demand content. has worked for me. it's free, just google it

I say yes.

For everyone experienicing slow speeds on Bitorrent try encrypting the connection on private trackers I get upto 200kBs total and from 2am to 9am they will download max (for me 700kBs) downloading internationally from cnet/download.com using a download manager (IDM- Great Product or you could try FDM which is free) speeds vary from 800-950kBs no matter what time of day. Youtube streaming is great, never have to let it buffer even on HD. Gaming is fine don't lag for local servers, although I can only say I've had experience with WC3/Garena. I must say this is a great plan coming from Go Large my speeds have improved dramatically and I can't complain about uncapped upload either, now seeding doesn't take forever!

To be honest I think I'm doing very well for plain old ADSL and I can't wait till 2011(I hope) for ADSL2+ to make full potential of this plan!

Extra note: Using just the regular Firefox downloader off Cnet I'm getting 30-40kBs, very slow, should definitely try a download manager!

And about TVNZ ondemand using IDM I click on all the chapters one at a time and watch all the ads. After watching these I click on the "download this video" drop down tab and chose each file that is above 2MB (use common sense here) the file will save with a name like "The Cult - Television New Zealand - Television - TV One_ TV2_ TVNZ 6_ TVNZ 7", "The Cult - Television New Zealand - Television - TV One_ TV2_ TVNZ 6_ TVNZ 7_2" and so on. If you watched from the ads from the first chapter and each consecutive chapter and download the flv links accordingly the extension _(Number Here) should correspond to the same chapter.

If you are really having trouble with TVNZ ondemand this method may be for you. If it seems too lengthy and complicated I suggest just streaming it normally.
