And abuse the hell out of free ISP services like trying to run mailing lists thru the smtp server that is for personal mailboxes etc. Had to seriously school a friends "IT provider" over trying to do that.

people forget or simply werent around at the time. Gmail wasnt the big thing back then , as it is now.

Xtra did originally use MS for the email provider. Hotmail was famous for having ongoing security issues back then.
No point in comparing what we would do now with what they decided way back then .

While they did promote XtraMSN Hotmail as part of the Microsoft partnership, xtra.co.nz email was not hosted by Microsoft.

The Yahoo!7 deal also included an online advertising component at a time where they sold off the Yellow Pages division.

Back when I first joined Telecom/Spark/Xtra, it was in the days before they migrated to Yahoo, and I vaguely recall MSN being the "provider" (host?) for Xtra email system back then. If I recall correctly, there were some unhappy customers when Telecom/Spark migrated from MSN (or whatever it was they were using) to Yahoo due to stuff ups and glitches.
