I jumped on online chat with Skinny couple of hours ago and told them I am still not connected. The CSR jumped on phone call with UFF while I waited and said they will push through the switch in next couple of hours. Looks like I am likely connected to skinny now as I cannot connect to my cameras anymore at home. No one is at home so I will have to wait till evening. 2degrees uses VLAN tagging so I will need to turn that off in the modem when I get home. On hold with 2degrees now to request them to disconnect my connection with them and close my account!

Do whatever you want to do man.

Gordy7:

What is the end date of a 12 month internet contract?

My ISP mentions that my start of contact is the day the internet service is started, but I can't find the definition for the end of contract day.

So I started on 3 March 2021 and I would think my contact end would be 3 March 2022.

Pretty sure it's from the day you get a service and that is also when you start paying. If you were ordering a new fibre connect they couldn't start billing or the contract until the connections actually installed as that can take weeks or even months.

Just a general reminder to those who at transferring across to Skinny from other RSPs, Skinny does use PPPoE and not IPoE, and this means you will need to change your modem settings, or swap out for the Skinny provided router.

I see a spike in customers failing authentication due to DHCP (IPoE) being used instead of PPPoE every day at 6am - which seems to be the time of day that the Chorus orders for change of RSP are executed.

The problems occur because Skinny state that you are not allowed to use your own router on their fibre plans.   I mean, it is a complete ban which they don't enforce.

It follows from this that Skinny do not even publishing settings for third party routers. So, customers are very much left to fend for themselves if they wish to use the new fritzbox 7590 they just bought !!

I completely agree about not supporting third party routers though.  But please publish the PPP settings.

I wonder if one can sign up for unlimited fibre ultra then after the first free 6 months downgrade to unlimited fibre 300?

The biggest problem I have with Skinny's approach is the e-waste.

I have no intention of using the provided router(even if I didn't already have a better solution, AFAIK it will not work for my use case) yet I was never given the opportunity to opt out of it, so now I am stuck with a perfectly good piece of electronics that will sit on a shelf doing nothing and eventually be recycled.

I am perfectly happy with the approach other providers take, where you can decline a router in favour of BYOD, but are 100% responsible for supporting that solution.

That's my plan. I'm on unlimited ultra and plan to either downgrade on month 5/6 or leave. Bit of a bugger that you can't add credit to a Skinny account, so I've started a separate bank account that'll receive $78 a month. By the time the first 6 months are over and done with, I'll have enough in that account to pay for another 6 months of internet.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Pretty sure someone on cheapies asked them and they said it's fine. I'm planning on doing the same, only ever had gigabit for the upload speeds and the new boost to 300/100 on the $78 plan is good enough for our usage.

As for the bundled router, I'm using it as I couldn't be bothered to deal with my router that router that wasn't exactly much better. It's always handy to have the ISP supported equipment about just in case your fancy one fails or something does break and you do need to validate that the connections not the fault. But agree the settings being published would take no effort on their part and would only be a good thing for those wanting to use their own gear.

The requirements are the same as for Spark, but no vlan tagging.

PPPoE only.

I.e. username/pwd can be anything, just nothing you would not have in an email address otherwise you will fail authentication.  No spaces, no funky punctuation etc.

Don't leave those fields blank either.

MTU of 1500 if your router supports it (1492 otherwise).

Authentication type PAP (or auto).

interesting I asked my ISP (stuff-fibre) to confirm whether I was in still in contract. I wasn't

They offered me the 4 months free deal to sign for 12 months. I assumed most ISPs did not offer deals to existing customers....

You got better than me when I asked stuff fibre about retention before signing on to skinny.
Literally got nothing.

I honestly didn't try, really didn't envisage stuff offering me anything as good as 6 months free with a cheap buyout once I have to pay for it. Based on what a you and some others got offered I'd say I made the right decision to not waste my time negotiating.

Been trying to 'Live Chat' with Spark for the last 2-3 days to find out some info, I;ve usually found this method quite good, but it hasn't worked during that time, so i rang, and actually got through within 2-3mins, and the guy at the other end when i said could you confirm it's a 30 day notice period and what day did my contract renew as i was looking to cancel, almost sounded pissed off and couldn't have been less interested...

They made their live chat really annoying because you can't access them through the website, it now requires you to download the spark app on your phone.

It definitely is 30 day though... But  they can activate that anytime and you can switch anytime after that 30 days even if you are switch 2 months later.

I used it a few weeks ago and didn't need to. But they have made it far harder for it to activate live chat and to get off the bot replies . IMO it is just stupid that a customer can't instantly contact someone on live chat, becuase the bot replies are more often than not unhelpful and are just speed bumps and frustrating, and make me less likely to use it in the future..
