Something is setup wrong with my 950/500 profile at Skinny. Tried on 2 different wired connections that previously got 920/510 speeds ok to local speedtest servers via 2degrees are only getting around 320/320 on both machines. Skinny chat service is playing up as its been trying to connect to a CSR after being on 1st in queue and just hangs there.

I used it a few weeks ago and didn't need to. But they have made it far harder for it to activate live chat and to get off the bot replies . IMO it is just stupid that a customer can't instantly contact someone on live chat, becuase the bot replies are more often than not unhelpful and are just speed bumps and frustrating, and make me less likely to use it in the future..

Oh that's weird, I was getting pushed to downloading the app and chatting through there even during business hours... Maybe it does that when they are busy because of the app chat isn't instant.

interesting I asked my ISP (stuff-fibre) to confirm whether I was in still in contract. I wasn't

They offered me the 4 months free deal to sign for 12 months. I assumed most ISPs did not offer deals to existing customers....

You got better than me when I asked stuff fibre about retention before signing on to skinny.
Literally got nothing.

They offered me 6 months half price on a 12 month contract when I asked them, at the end of October, if they would match the Skinny offer.

The chat on the app is hopeless, as it's not real time, so you end up with half finished conversations. that you need to restart, the web chat is good if you can get through

@billgates have a read of my thread here:

This may be related to your issue? In my case it was a provisioning error and it got fixed, it just took Skinny far longer than it should have.

Thanks @ashtonaut. Yep same issue and speeds as yours. I sent Skinny a message on Facebook as their chat service was having an issue earlier but I wil try the chat service again and I will reference them to your thread as well.

@ashtonaut I managed to get hold of Tutatahi fibre directly and provided them with my reference number for custover from 2degrees to skinny and they confirmed that it has been provisioned for 950/500 on their end. The CSR checked it with the tech team as well at Tuatahi and they also confirmed connection is only on port 1 of ONT which is what I am connected to. They reckon, it must be on skinny's end who I cannot get hold of via chat cause their system seems to be down. At least I have internet @ 320/320 hehe for the weekend.

Skinny chat service has always worked fine for me, and working perfectly fine today.

On skinny.co.nz you click on the 'Got a question, ask Gina box' bottom right corner of page, and type 'Human', then click connect to live chat.

Yes the chat started working again for me just few minutes ago. Their live service was down before. Tried from phone and desktop PC on 2 different internet connections.

Skinny CSR confirmed that they can see the profile set to 950/500 on their end as well and said he will do a port reset on ONT on his end after chat ends. I will have to run a speedtest tomorrow when I get back home again to see if that resolved the issue.

Ok so finally (long story),  up and running after switching from Orcon to the new Skinny offering.

Couple of interesting things.
I am on vdsl and with orcons router , NF18AC  was getting Max attainable speed of 28Mbs download.
I had already bought a Fritzbox with VOIP, as the Orcon modem has to be returned and I need VOIP for my phone line. Skinny do not "support" VOIP.

Changeover went seamlessly, with the Orcon router still connecting at 28Mbs but with a different public skinny address.

Set up the Fritzbox and connected it but was only getting max download speed of 21Mbs.

Connected up the Skinny supplied smart modem and was getting 26Mbs max download.
I had already returned the Orcon modem so couldn't try this again.
I happened to have an old HG 659 router and tried this and am getting 30Mbs max download speeds with this.

Swapping backwards and forwards with these 3 routers ( I know thats not recommended) the HG659 consistently shows 30Mbs + attainable speeds.

Maybe not a big deal to people on fibre but a very big change to us non fibre users.
I also confirm and check speeds with online checkers , OOKLA etc. (Just in case the routers are lying)

Go figure.

I get about 40Mbit download on Skinny VDSL on their router, so not a limit of the router.

Have you tried a different router?
I believe the chipset in the router is quite important to maximise download speeds.
You might even achieve 50Mbs with a different router.

FYI you can now bump this to the Unlimited 300 plan for free, following on from Chorus's speed bumps across the network. Probably depends if your network is run by Chorus, and available on your Skinny settings page
