Hi, can someone please answer the questions I have:
1)Is WCDMA the same as UMTS?
2)Why isn't there info about the 2100mhz network on the telecom new network site?
3)If there is 2100mhz in the main centres, will a phone that has 850mhz but not 2100 mhz get reception?

I like the look of the 5800 phone http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_5800_xpressmusic-2537.php but it is either 2100/900 HSDPA or 850/1900mhz hsdpa. What would be best for the telecom network?

And if i were to search at the gsm arena site http://www.gsmarena.com/search.php3 which boxes would i tick to give a list of the phone that will work on the telecom network?

Thanks!

Telecom has scrapped the GSM part of the new network. There will be no GSM component whatsoever.

It will only do 850/2100 WCDMA from my understanding.

- Telstra HTC Touch Pro2 - Energy ROM WM6.5.5 20 Oct/Cyanogen Mod Froyo 2.2 - R.I.P
- AT&T Galaxy S Captivate 16GB on XT (now with brother)
- Samsung Galaxy S2 on XT- Runs ICS 4.0.3 Resurrection Remix 9.2
- Business Hours - Work In The Electricity Industry, After Hours - DJ/Turntablist - Will Scratch Vinyl For Free'
- What's next??? S3?

1.Yes

2.Because they started with the plan of 2100MHz WCDMA in the cities and 850MHz GSM/EDGE everywhere else. They since decided to go fully 850MHz WCDMA instead, but are keeping the 2100MHz setup.

3.Most phones are tri-band and some are quad-band and most will have 2100MHz and 850MHz, if not all.

4. 850MHz/1900MHz.

I was told in another thread I posted on here that it was 850 only across the whole country...

freitasm:
varix: Or is it going to be 850 across the whole country, meaning that I will only need to purchase a phone that supports 850 and be good to go?

Correct. And if you are in a contract when the new network comes live you get a free handset - not sure what model, wouldn't expect much but it's something to help people move on.

It is 850 nationwide but also has 2100MHz in the main cities. 2100MHz coverage in the main cities is still essential as it's debatable whether Telecom could actually have adequate capacity in the main cities for 850MHz only at present due to the existing CDMA network. There are now plenty of CDMA sites using multiple carriers so there isn't a lot of spare bandwidth available.

There will presumably be far fewer 2100 sites than initially planned due to the change of technology @ 850MHz but a dual band 850/2100 phone will still be essential if you want want the best end user experience.

The acrrier issue isnt as big as you would think. I was involved in a detailed study of it. Strangley the isuue is mainly outside the cities in holiday hotspots. All they need to do is churn users off their crappy CDMA cities before the big holiday weekend and they shouldnt have any issues. Low RPU users dont mahe calls anyway and a high percentage of TNZ customers are low value customers - look at their average RPU versus VF.

2100 for roaming revenue as well dont forget.

I'm quite happy with vodafones 2100 around town, if telecoms is the same then it may be ok to not have 850 as well.

Roaming is not that big a deal really for TNZ. Roaming revenue in total is about $200m in NZ - $105M is outbound roaming and $95m is inbound. About $45m comes from Aussie and about 45% of the Aussie users are on Telstra the rest are spread arround. If you make an educated guess at the demographics of Aussie roamers (and roamers in general) you can assume they will have upmarket handsets so the Telstra ones should come with 850/2100. You could probably agrue that the rest would probably have TNZ as the second choice of partner when they get off the plane and register....

Now here is the thing if you are a TNZ customer make certain you handset is 850/2100 and quad band GSM if you plan to travel overseas 850 will only be good for you in North and South America and Aussie. 2100 and quad GSM is the outbound roaming play.

@zena1919. I am not sure what industry or country you work but any revenue stream worth NZ$200M PA in NZ is a big deal.

Gidday Neal from TNZ - I assume from your title you are technical.

1) I am a kiwi in the Telco space

2) I dont think you read and understood my comment.

Please read it again and you will see that what I was saying is that TNZs total share of the roaming market is not currently significant (as you will know) and that logic says it will be tough to get any major shift in that marketshare - besides the outbound roaming (at last TNZ customers will be able to roam like they are at home) and inbound roaming from Telstra (assuming TNZ can negotiate a preferential roaming agreement Trans-Tasman).

Roaming is not a big part of the total mobile market in NZ and would not have been a major factor in the business case - customer retention and aquisition (and associated costs) at a time when TNZ continues to loose marketshare to VF is a big factor.

TNZ simple had to get out of the CDMA2000 technology deadend.

I didn't write it was only 850MHz. The 2100MHz is there because it was part of the original plan, and they decided to keep it. But the main network will be 850MHz.

OK, dumb question time:
  1. VFNZ is 900/2100 WCDMA.  As the main Telecom network will be 850, I assume that VFNZ handsets which are 900/2100 will not work on this network?
  2. Is VFNZ dual band for WDCMA, i.e. does the handset need to be 900/2100?  Just asking this because most of the parallel imports are 850/2100.
Thanks in advance.

1. I would assume that if the phone is tri-band, and includes 850 support, then it will work on the new network.
