get around shaping? not sure. setup your own private proxy server based in the usa. configure bit torrent through ssh. bitblinder?

They will probably shape International traffic too, so it would have to be a proxy in NZ. (= lots of cost)

usenet will be shaped too since it's "p2p".

But yeah as for the proxy idea, well it's just not an option as 1# NZ host's costs allot, even if you find a cheap one, they wont allow you to use endless amounts of international data, in the end you will find that it's cheaper to pay the ISP for the extra data.

But if a US proxy where to work, well then where in business :P

It would be great if people on BigTime plan could do speed tests at various time and post results here... to give a fair overview of what sort of speeds to expect during the shapping hours.

What I suggest is to do speedtest to some NZ server and US at 9am, 12pm, 3pm, 6pm, 9pm and 12am. and also it would be great if you guys could load some video from youtube and tell how fast it was at the time.

I fear that it might be best to wait a couple of months before asking for this as that's about how long it took for xtra to attract all the leeches last time out.

As it is a major hassle to change ISP's (well at least when something goes wrong with a service order) i would hate to jump ships only to find that the new ship was sinking faster.

Depends how their traffic management is implemented. Hopefully someone will do some encrypted bit torrent over ssh or tor tests.

I would suspect they have some smart DPI hardware and can probably limit connections per user and rate shape per user.

Edit: Had great speeds tonight on go-large, about 5x faster than normal for torrents, also youtube was streamable without buffering.. at the time i thought it was out of the ordinary and that someone had telecom had stuffed up and put go large users into the big-time pool.. however it all apears to be normal again :(

Encryption is all well and good but there is a big difference between data transmission confidentiality vs preventing transmission profiling. Just because you are encrypting PDUs does not mean that a traffic shaper cannot reasonably idenfity some of your flows as p2p.

Also attempting to do so is probably in violation of your T&Cs..

But how to get interleaving turned off? It was off when I was on pro ( have a good connection get up to 1.8MB/s downloads, connect at around 19000kbps)

Other than that it SEEMS to be going ok.

Just phone Telecom and Ask for Interleaving to be turned off :-) Should be simple as.

Well, having since moved over to 'Big Time' at midnight, I've had no problems; I'm connected to the exchange at 2300kbps, and getting around 300KB/s off rapidshare. For me, I'm stoked if I get over 100KB/s - so all is going well.

Interleaving is enabled on some lines because the quality is horrible - I had continuous disconnections when interleaving was off - one of the things that annoys me is instead of this fibre what needs to be done is more exchanges, upgrading of existing infrastructure so that people can get around 10,000kbps connections.

Good news, Telecom have read your forum post and taken your suggestion on board. In fact they thought it was so good they decided to colaborate with Skynet in the future to send the T-1000 back with your infrastructure suggestions to the early 00's! Sadly Arnie didnt seem to make it to some of the other NZ telcos however, leading to some confusion over TCNZs cabinetisation intentions.
