kieran21: Hey just got BigPipe VDSL going yesterday, but have some speed variability issues. Initially yesterday, I was syncing at 38000ish and speedtest.net came up around 35Mbps DL/8Mbps UL. Current speed tests today, are around 2Mbps DL/8Mbps UL. Have tried both WiFi/Ethernet with no effect. In a couple of instances, the DSL connection has dropped completely then auto-reconnected back to the same slower speeds.

I have a master filter with a dedicated cable run from ETP to DSL jackpoint. Was previously getting about 14Mbps/1Mbps ADSL with no masterfilter/jackpoint.

Using the Telecom HG630b it shows the following line stats:

Line standard VDSL2
Downstream line rate (kbit/s) 39373
Upstream line rate (kbit/s) 10332
Downstream SNR (dB) 13.3
Upstream SNR (dB) 17.2
Downstream line attenuation (dB) 12.6
Upstream line attenuation (dB) 25.7
Downstream output power (dBmV) 13.5
Upstream output power (dBmV) -1.3
Downstream CRC 3440
Upstream CRC 0
Downstream FEC 631880
Upstream FEC 0

Any clues what it could be?

Could be part of the dlm process maybe?

Either A. the modem. They arn't 'bad' but the sure and heck are not great.
B. It could be the amount of customers bigpipe has now? Pretty unlikely but it's a possibility none the less.

I would say if you've got some shocking speed issues run a few tests first. Three tests consisting of 3 lots of each through out the day. These tests are ping test, speedtest.net and a tracert test

Do three of each through out the day (morning, mid-day and afternoon), Also with ping / tracert each test consists of a pair, by this I mean each test you need to test to a local website and a international website eg www.trademe.co.nz and to www.bbc.co.uk (hence a pair)

once you've done this three times through-out the day give all those results to bigpipe.
Honestly doing that will save ALOT of headaches because without em chorus at the best of times don't like speed related issues without a 'physical' fault.

Given it's a new VDSL connection it's possible that this is to do with DLM.

speedtest is useful, but isn't great though as a genuine test of your capabilities.
If your modem is syncing at almost 40Mbps but speedtest is showing 2Mbps,  then probably worth trying a couple of different local servers, or even trying a 'real world' file download and seeing what speed it comes through at to rule out the possibility of speedtest.net just being borked (that's the technical term)

Hi,

I'm pretty sure Coffeebaron is talking about my line and I have to say he did a good job. Can't recommend him enough for that kind of job. I'm a happy Bigpipe customer so far, 34mb dl, 9.5 up can't complain about anything specially when it's free and with no cap. I'm a heavy user, and my speed is very steady on dl linux iso and hi-res audio (creative commons of course).
A dynamic ip will be the cherry on the cake, will see in the future!
Cheers,

My previous speed was 24dl, 9,5 up. I'm really not quite sure about my set up, used to be with adsl Vodafone, jump to Bigpipe vdsl offer. I live in a building in CBD, so they connected me without me needed to be home. Maybe someone came to the building panel or maybe not.
Thanks, after almost 2 years reading Geekzone, was time to sign up!

so what did Coffeebaron did on your line?

Coffeebaron, just wondering when are you going to visit wellington? :-) currently got 22/3 sync - i got master splitter installed by chorus. I was getting 18/1 prev (att of 20/8db)... and now (22/55db down/up) - was hoping my up is a bit higher...

One day I'll make the trip to Wellington - my home city in fact, Wainuiomata boy :)
Zeppe's line was good quality star wiring configuration. No master splitter installed. Basically the extra wiring stubs are massive VDSL killers! Traced a dedicated pair for VDSL jack-point and installed master splitter, and bang +10 :)
Just the congested 2.4GHz wireless affecting connection now, which I also tweaked to get a bit more performance.

Just got switched over to BigPipe I think ( no confirmation email as of yet, but the speed test says Telecom Ltd.) Speed has dropped a bit, was 16-18 mps on orcon ADSL, 13-14 mps on orcon VDSL, getting 8 mbps on bigpipe, all down. Up speeds were 1, 2, 1 respectively. Hopefully speed improves but was I supposed to get an email?

yes you should have received an email confirming, I'll chase that up.

When you talk about your speed, are you referring to your modem sync speed or speedtest results?
Extremely unusual to be getting speeds as low as that on VDSL  (both for Orcon and with us).

Having a look at your address, the chorus map suggests you are actually outside VDSL coverage (although the prequal tool says you are in, or else you would not have been provisioned on it).

http://www.chorus.co.nz/maps

It could well be the case that the pre-qual tool is in error - which is why your VDSL speeds on both Orcon and Bigpipe are so poor.

Otherwise, if you are moving from Orcon VDSL, then I assume you had a master filter installed when you signed up with them?  If not, then getting one would be the first thing I suggest to solve your speed issue.

Hey,

sorry to hear that.   I can't see any unanswered queries in the queue.
Have a look in your junk mail box to make sure a response hasn't gone into there.

If there is nothing there, then PM me your email address (the one you used to submit the ticket) so I can chase up the exact issue.

ETA:  you should have received an immediate confirmation that your query had been received.  did you get that at least?
