kyhwana2:
cafeg: Yep, after you pay $49.95 per month first for 0 gig
Then its $1.02 a gig
makes 40 gig = $90.91 per month

Telecom is cheaper @ $79.95 per month for 40gig

But for 60gig on telecom it's $120, on xnet for 60gig it's $110.. :)
So I guess it depends on how much you can cut your usage down after big time runs out..

when I read above only thing can come to my mind: paying much more (double) for what I have today. Add to that the extra pay for emissions, increase in GST etcetera and you are out of your pay check almost even before you get it.

I got a nice little generic reply from Telecom re my complaint:

Thank you for taking the time to email us with your views on our decision to remove the Big Time broadband plan.

Closing Big Time was a hard decision for us, because we wanted to be the only broadband provider in New Zealand to offer this innovative plan with no monthly data cap. We've done our best to manage activity on the plan to ensure everyone gets plenty of bandwidth, but over the past few months, an increasing number of people have started using programmes specially designed to get around traffic management, which has made it hard for us to ensure everyone gets the same experience online.

We updated our technology to keep up with these programmes, but this takes continual work and resource, and unfortunately it's just not proving viable. This is the main reason for the removal of the plan.

We are in the process of sending recommendation letters to all of our Big Time customers. I appreciate that the alternative options may not be suitable for your needs, however we are offering a $20.00/month account credit for 3 months to those customers who opt to change to the 40 GB Pro plan prior to 13 August. The Pro plan has also been changed so the overage charges are no longer 2c per MB but rather $2 per GB. This is a saving of $18.48/GB.

Jason, I appreciate that you have a choice of providers, we are always in the process of monitoring our plans and make regular changes to our offerings. For example, this time last year the Adventure plan was 10 GB and the Pro plan 20 GB, they are now double that for the same cost. I expect our plans will continue to change and grow as data requirements increase as they have always done.

Thanks again for your email. If you would like to make a plan change at any time, please complete the online form at www.telecom.co.nz/changeplan.

Kind regards

The first bit is pretty much a cut and paste from the letter they sent and the last part basically tells me to get stuffed.

This was my reply:

This is the kind of canned response I expected from Telecom which essentially tells me to suck eggs. What is even more insulting is that you are offering a double data offer to NEW customers but I am not eligible for that offer because I am just a dumb schmuck existing customer. Not good enough Telecom, not good enough....typical FAIL from our favourite NZ monopoly.

LOL, I don't expect a reply to my follow up complaint.

I dont know if anyone from Telecom is still reading this thread, but I have a new solution.

Its a bit over the top compared to other more simple solutions but anyway...

1:  Address the issue of people buying games over the internet, most likely the Steam service by Valve.

*Issue - use alot of data, lots going internationally when it is NOT needed + uses heaps of peoples data caps which to be honest, arent huge Telecom. No offence.

*Fix - Get a Steam content server for the whole of NZ and offer free data like Telstra already does with On3.
Even better start up your own gaming network to keep as much data as possible on your own network.

2:  You tube. We all use it. It uses lots of bandwidth.

*Issue - uses heaps of data.
*Fix - more caching. Offer free data for all videos loaded off the caching servers from Telecom.

3:  Exceeding Data Cap.

*Issue - people dont want to pay a fortune to use the internet, and the broadband plans need to better accommodate families and flats which naturally will need a bit more data than a lone user.

The cap of 64kbps is really bad and is not very usable for families, flats or other places with multiple devices / users  using the internet.
-Gaming bad
-Web browsing slow
-Downloads slow
-Streaming video not even worth it.

*Fix - increase the capped speed of 64kbps to a more reasonable & usable  128/128  or  256/256  * "Up to" - speed and not guaranteed *

Will help keep usage on the southern cross cable down as opposed to offering unlimited plans or massive data cap plans, while ensuring the end user(s) can keep going about their web activities at a reduced speed.

Alternative to all this

Try a new system where FREE DATA is given for

eg: gaming, you tube, trade me, video on demand, emails.

and a DATA CAP is given for

eg: all content that is not part of the free data area.

We all know that Telecom have no interest in helping out us 'Vampires', so suggesting alternate plans seems pointless.

After reading my letter that came yesterday and looking around at plans I will be dropping Telecom all together. I have always been with Telecom for internet and calls, sticking in there when other ISP's have offered better deals in internet (until GoLarge/BigTime came along) and calling.

I am moving my internet and calling to another ISP, not another dime going to Telecom from me.

Thanks Telecom for unlimited while it lasted, and boo for taking a step backwards.

We would like to stay with telecom, but with the current prices & data caps, its just not going to last our family or in the case of pro plan + over charges , would be too expensive.

I don't even think Telecom is looking at this thread nor does it care, so no matter what great ideas or even better deal offers we make they won't even consider, so why waste your time with this thread? It comes to show that what they really think about us customers they don't care what they think as long as they get there money they remand happy while in turn we are left with the pain.

I know an ISP that actually listens to there customers and that is Orcon. If I have an idea or something that needs to be dealt with they take in on board and the next week its done and done and done.

I got the phone call yesterday from telecom about changing over from bigtime.
I had already changed earlier in the week to another plan which they were suprised to hear.
The lady I talked to said everyone had been quite agreeable so far about it she had called to explain their options to changeover..

Hi - if you have a second Sky decoder how does it work with your sky billing - do you have to pay extra per month?

A second Sky decoder is $25 monthly, this is multiroom. You can access different channels that the other decoder

On that point, if you ghacve MySkyHDi, can you get another MySkyHDi for the same?

Not sure if this has been posted already...

But it looks like worldnet.co.nz has an identacle plan to BigTime.

http://www.worldnet.co.nz/personal/dsl/?menu=price#dslplan

Not sure what kind of track record it has...But if Telecom can't do it, how the hell is this company going to provide a decent connection speed and remain "unlimited".
