Just did a tracert and getting the same as you, between 1100-1200ms going to youtube on mdr-fid-int.akbr5.global-gateway.net.nz

That hop seems to de-prioritises ICMP so it's may be a bit of a red herring.

It's not going to tell you what UDP or TCP are doing through that hop.

Try a tcp traceroute, on windows you can download nmap / zenmap
http://nmap.org/dist/nmap-5.51-setup.exe

Then from cmd prompt you can run something like this:

nmap -Pn --traceroute -p 80 youtube-ui.l.google.com

Depends what sites in the US you are connected to. If they have poorer upstream suppliers, like some of the cheap web hosts use, then you can experience problems with speed.

But I have noticed that international speeds on telecom to a few websites hosted in US have been quite slow this week, bu they maybe hosted on cheaper providers.

I've certainly noticed a big degradation in international speed since Tues/Wed this week. Sometimes I can get 4 - 7 MB down but often its crawling at 1 - 1.5MB. Prior to this week international performance has been great.

Couple of questions:

Have you guys reported this problem to Telecom?  I reported it last night and one of their "complex technical suuport" team members asked me to do a tracert this morning.  But I was at work so did that after 5pm and am still waiting for a reply.

I would encourage everyone to report this problem.

On the other hand, would anyone mind to tell me where / which area/suburb you are in with poor speed right now?  I am connected to the Henderson exchange.

I called Telecom yesterday but never really got anywhere. I ran out of steam and gave up. I'm connected to the Titirangi exchange.
