cricket4life7575: haha ok, my dad is to cheap to get like orcon's unlimited plan, he would rather upgrade to 50gb, like that is going to help

Why does your Dad feel 50GB should be enough?

With respect to your Dad being 'cheap', have you ever seen that YouTube video of the father in the USA who shot the daylights out of his kids laptop for the things they said about him on line?

Ragnor:  Presumably you and your sibling are using lots of data, why not offer to throw in the extra $20 and get 150GB

+1 I think that's a great bit of advice.  That's like $5 a week, or half an hours after school work.

No it won't be throttled, but you've ignored the advice to even test on wired as opposed to wireless, and you continue to use different speedtests.

- You should test using wired only.
- You should test using a speedtest connected (almost) directly to the Telecom core network.

As you have pointed out, you've been using HUGE amounts of data since Feb22, imagine what happens if lots of people do that in one area.

As you've also noted, this ends today - so why not wait a couple of days and see if this extremely artificial (200GB+ for a 30GB price) situation calms down.

You could also try doing a continuous ping to your first hop address (The first remote IP address when you run a tracert to anywhere) at different times of day and see if it returns a very consistent value, or if it jumps around.

You could also provide the ADSL router stats as well if you wanted.

I'm afraid that unless you're prepared at least to test wired, there's little sensible help anyone could provide.

Cheers - N

cricket4life7575: what does it have to do with Tivo?? I don't get it
and no I have not been throttled - On my 30gb plan, I have used 220gb and this is my speed right now

220GB - Peter, really?  That's some outstanding value for Christchurch customers if that's been going on for the past 12 months.

As for that speed test, I know exactly where that server is and I know what capacity is running into it.  There's no way that 140ms is anything but your wifi and computer causing that result.

The suggestion that Telecom don't have enough hand over capacity to that server on the network is just silly.

peter???? and yes I know, my computer is the cause of it. I am currently uploading to youtube and downloading videos, so that is why speedtest shows slower results.

If you want to email me pl at telecom dot co dot nz your home phone number or account number I can look into it further and see what's going wrong.

Also as others have suggested the only real way to get a speed test is to do it wired rather than via wireless otherwise it doesn't count.  And to post your DSL line stats from your modem.

I suspect if you try wired with your computer you would see a significant difference.

Plus if you check the line stats of your modem you would see what the issue is from there.

But this is all the same as what everyone else on here has been trying to say to help you.

WHAT!?

Are you saying that you're posting speedtests complaining about slower speeds AT THE SAME TIME AS YOU ARE UPLOADING TO YOUTUBE AND DOWNLOADING STUFF?

Cheers - N

I would have thought it would be pretty obvious that you shouldn't be doing anything on your broadband line especially youtube etc when you run a speed test.

This also includes all other computers in the house.

Well, you _REALLY_ need to learn to write more clearly, since you JUST posted this...

You've given us haphazard information and have not followed any basic troubleshooting suggestions. How are we going to help you??

I used to try that, but they would be very similar and most of the time, wireless would be faster

bro, I was talking to DonGould - i was meant to quote him where he says 'As for that speed test, I know exactly where that server is and I know what capacity is running into it.  There's no way that 140ms is anything but your wifi and computer causing that result.'

I'm sorry, you're really not making a lot of sense to me. What is even the point of posting a speedtest result at all if you are uploading and downloading at the same time? All you are doing is adding confusing information.

Come back when you've gathered the basic info requested above (pings to first hop, ADSL sync stats etc, all over a wired connection on a computer that's not ancient)

If you don't know how to get that info, drop me a PM.

Cheers - N

cricket4life7575: bro, I was talking to DonGould

'bro', just a quick heads up here...  The two 'coots' here that you're talking to aren't really your bro, they're not even my bro (at 42), they are in fact two fairly senior people in the BB space with in Telecom here in Christchurch.

These are the guys who sign off on you getting unlimited bb after an equake, or getting bigger data allowances on your service, from time to time, and work very hard to bring you as much value as they possible can with in the constraints of the massive organization they work for.

When someone crazy in the CEO's department or marketing comes up with the idea of giving Chch based users extra value it's these guys who get asked if the network can even do it and take the risk that it won't cause problems that then result in ComCom action and everyone loosing some value for a long while.

I suggest they're here on Sunday, in their own time, helping you out as best they can (with the very very limited amount of information you've provided) because the posts you're making are mus-representing the good work they do to bring you that 220Gb's of value you've been enjoying.

With respect, you have to remember and keep in mind that others read these posts when deciding if they're going to choose Telecom as a provider and what you've posted actually creates more work for their marketing departments and tech teams, which in turn takes away revenue from the pool of cash they have to spend on actual service delivery.  ie - they can either spend money on buying more gear or more money on paying people on the helpdesk to refute the claims your speed tests suggest.

With respect, you need to pay these guys the same level of respect you should pay your headmaster at school, not your mate in the play ground when he wants a swig of your coke.

D

(N, P - you can just PM me your comments about my taking my own advice from time to time, thanks ;) )
