Part of it possibly is, but imo it's still a poor marketing attempt from Vodafone, to cash in on public awareness of an alternate initiative of the same name. Vodafone would (and have) thrown the law book at Telecom and others for similar things in the past, so :P

Are Telecom not guilty of doing the same thing though, calling the new VDSL product 'Ultra' VDSL and including it their Ultra Broadband packages?

Maybe Vodafone should have used the Carlsberg style method of marketing speak when describing their mythical Supernet.

I don't think this is about "ultra fast". It's all about "Best".

I agree, the actual legal case is all about 'the best'. The digs about the ultra fast were probably just an extra comment by a press officer to the reporter..

so, by that article one might take the assumption Vodafone are planning to extend the HFC network and just ignore the FTTH network completely?

Ultra != Best

"Ultra" means- "going beyond what is usual or ordinary; excessive; extreme" BUT not "best".

Yes.

Vodafone see no real long term value in HFC anyway.

I think I'd rather have cable in NZ.

Where I live (adelaide) we get cable so there's no NBN planned for our area... 30Mbps down, (but we get about 37) and only 1Mbps up which is pathetic. We can go to 100 down but still only 2.4Mbps up... it sucks badly!

I think VF should keep the cable running.

(edit) Over here, cable is still probably a better option until we find out if the next govt work out what they're doing with the NBN... 25Mbs is a bit pathetic too.

So this is how I interpret what Vodafone SuperNet is: SuperNet gives you all the services *in ONE package* to keep you connected i.e landline, fixed-line broadband, mobile and TV are available all from ONE provider (which is Vodafone), not two or three separate providers for different services..

I just saw an ad on FOUR a little while ago where Vodafone was advertising Ultra Fast Broadband is available on Supernet

Miss-leading advertising to me as this no doubt refers to their Cable network and UFB is generally referred to the Fibre to the Home network being rolled out

Would make sense, Except that Cable services are not DSL based.

As for the marketing of UFB, It's actually hole in the government proposition as UFB is not actually specific to fibre and is intended to include generally upgraded services including LTE.

It comes from the intended purpose of the UFB initiative which is not specifically to provide fibre services but to provide significantly faster or "Ultra Fast" services and the UFB banner can actually include Fibre, LTE, Cable and I wouldn't expect VDSL to be out of the question.
