I get confused when people post this. What does it mean? Is it that if I am on DLM-1 then the ping I have now (on ADSL) will increase by 1 and if I was on DLM-8 then my current ping will increase by 16 or am I way off?

EDIT: I have never seen a screenshot with anyone on 1ms, the lowest I have seen is 11ms.

I don't get this stuff.

DSL has "interleaving" levels/depths which is basically a hardware level error correction, it fixes errors in transmission but adds delay.

As a gamer you want interleaving off or interleaving depth as low as possible, this is because it's better for a bad packet of data to be dropped and re-transmitted by a higher level protocol UDP or TCP/IP than delayed.

On ADSL2+ contact your ISP and ask them to "turn interleaving off". On VDSL2 the line settings are managed "automagically" by the DLM system, if you have a good line you'll get a good profile with low interleaving depth/delay.

Can you post a screenshot of the line stats in your modem?

Thats mean ping on last mile connection, between you(your router) and DSLAM (Chorus Cabinet or Exchange). So if you pinging any host, you need to add 1+1 ms on DLM-1, 8+8 on DLMs 2 4 8 and 16+16 on DLMs 3 5 7 8.

For example delay between nzherald.co.nz website and TELECOM ISP is 4 ms.

On ADSL2+ Without interleaving you get 7ms

On VDSL2 with DLM-1 profile you get 7ms.

On VDSL2 with DLM-2 profile you get 23ms.
On VDSL2 with DLM-4 profile you get 23ms.
On VDSL2 with DLM-6 profile you get 23ms.

On VDSL2 with DLM-3 profile you get 39ms.
On VDSL2 with DLM-5 profile you get 39ms.
On VDSL2 with DLM-7 profile you get 39ms.
On VDSL2 with DLM-8 profile you get 39ms.

on UFB you probably get 5 ms.

A couple of clarifications.

On Telecom at least you aren't pinging the DSLAM, you're pinging a network element slightly deeper into the network (but still in your geographic region usually).

Generally speaking yes, ADSL2+ with interleaving off is the same as DLM1 and the rest of your numbers match.

However, there's more of an impact in living in the South Island to international pings than there is from typical VDSL2 DLM latency contributions for Auckland users.

Short answer though- Latency doesn't change much between ADSL2+ and VDSL2 based on a technology view - however you can't select your interleaving settings in VDSL2 like you can on ADSL2+ so in some cases you might end up with worse latency (and in some cases you may get better)

Can you post a screenshot of the line stats in your modem?

My Modem doesn't give me line status because it sucks, if I go to the page that displays stats it is just blank. I did contact my ISP and I was told my attenuation was 3/10 (up/down). Also my download is 14Mbps and upload is 0.7Mbps. Is that the information you wanted.

EDIT: changed the upload attenuation from 4 to 3.

Inphinity: Ping on VDSL seems fine to me, and I believe I am on DLM-2 not 1.

What was your ping before you went onto VDSL?

For the same Telecom test site, it was between 24 and 30ms.

18-20ms for me on DLM-2, i find quite the opposite though, moving to vdsl was much more responsive and snappier.
