I would say get a case logged, the Chorus guy should come out. I can also run another line test for you and see what it reports now that you do have VDSL.

It does seem strange you are getting such a high rate upload but so bad download.

Network multiples (or any multiple for that matter) will cause higher than expected attenuation, due to the capacitive effect of having a bridge tap on the circuit.  The length of the multiple determines the degree of additional attenuation and the frequency band which it affects.

What's your lead-in like from the street - not an old aerial tru-rip cable is it?

Eww... Just checked your line out, something is very wrong here. Going to escalate to the 3rd tier broadband support team tomorrow.

You're on the right track - see what Peter comes back with from the line test, as that should give a pretty definitive answer.

Thanks Peter, Chorus got in touch and organised a Sat morning visit. He first checked something out on the road, and then all the work from the master splitter install from Wednesday but couldn't find anything wrong. I think the main jack point had three inputs, he tried each one and one of them had slightly better speed, but only 9 down instead of 8. He then tried a speedtest just before the ETP and was getting 24 down so concluded something wrong between ETP and main jackpoint. I happened to have a cable guy at the house at the time giving me a quote to put an HDMI cable into the walls who turned out to be ex Telecom from way back who said he could move the ETP to a closer position to the main jack point and that should fix the problem. The Chorus guy said there wasn't much more he could do.

However Chorus rang me back today and this guy was convinced that they could fix it with another visit, so I'm now waiting for the tech to call and organise a time. I asked for another Sat morning appt if possible as it is difficult for me to take time off work, last Wednesday was tricky enough. So all in all bit confused to exactly what the problem could be, not overly confident that another Chorus visit will fix the issue but I have no doubt they are trying their best.

The saga continues! Special thanks to Peter for logging the job with Chorus too, saved me a phone call.

sounds like progress...

a bit iffy that the tech could get 24 at the ETP and couldnt make heads or tails of why it wasnt doing much the same at your jackpoint...

did they do the cat6 run? with a rj45 jackpoint for dsl? or simply left it at your standard phone wire, in saying something along the lines of, it shouldnt matter..

sounds like the cable guy you had out may be a better option than the tech unfortunatly..

That post is confusing. So at the ETP 24Mbps, so what's with multiple / main jack-points? Shouldn't there be a new feed from ETP to new dedicated xDSL jack-point?

yeah, that was kinda my gut feeling too, he worked for Telecom for over 20 years and certainly seemed to know his stuff. Main difference is he will charge and Chorus is covered by the $100 I've already paid for the VDSL install.

We have three phone jackpoints, the main one is in the hallway, one in the spare bedroom and one in the kitchen. They are all BT connections and looks like cat5 links them all together. Also add to the issue the house is split into units, upstairs and downstairs. Not sure what the unit upstairs internet is like, I've asked them to run a speedtest but yet to hear back (normal ADSL).

The VDSL install did not include a new feed from the ETP, I guess that is part of the issue.

sounds much like my install, i had to argue for over a 2 weeks till my line was ran properly. this includes directly through their faults (visionstream, in my case)

reason i was given for them not doing it, it wouldnt make any difference - i had riptie cable (speaker wire) for my phoneline at the time, which ran through the flat infront.. their lack of understanding in how a cables impedance ability to affect an line was eyeopening to say the least.

this included multiple arguments with different techs, in stating that it was required for a vdsl install to do a spitter, cat6 run and a rj45 jackpoint. in which one of them rang their superior to check, and came back with because of it being a rental, cables are not to be ran. (but double sided taping a rj45 jack to the jib board was.. )

they were very unimpressed in being made to run the fresh cable, but in the end did so. ironically, there was an improvement....

Yep.. that's the issue and I have been chasing up with the internal broadband help desk to get Chorus back and do what they are contractually obliged to do. When doing a VDSL install a new Cat5 cable is supposed to be run. This wasn't done from the sounds of it so hence I am asking to get someone back from Chorus to do it properly.

Most likely it is the entire issue.

After 3 visits by Chorus the culprit was found, the faceplate the first Chorus guy put on was the issue. Now getting 21 down and still 10 up, which is quite an improvement over ADSL.

One question though, now that it's taken two weeks for my issue to be sorted do I need to get Telecom to reset the dynamic line management side of things?
