Got VDSL installed today, initially was getting about 15 down and 10 up. Previously with DSL I was getting 8 down and nearly 1 up I was fairly pleased with this result, download not that great but twice as fast as what I had before and very happy with the upload. But then the tech came back a few hours later to install a new faceplate (I think that is what it is called) and when I did a speedtest later I am now only getting 8 down and 9 up.

What could cause this sudden reduction in the download? Surely changing the faceplate wouldn't make that much difference? The tech mentioned that it takes 48 hours for the connection to properly configure itself, and then a further 2 weeks for it to settle to the speeds you'll get going forward.

Is there any point in ringing Telecom now, or will they just tell me to wait 2 days/weeks.

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

 



 

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I have heard that you shouldn't turn off the modem in that time to let it configure itself settle down to the right profile so it should get better over time.

with speeds like that, im very surprised you got connected, sounds like your line would be WELL over the 10.8db mark.


what is your attenuation?

You need to wait at least 10 days to let the modem decide on the best profile for your connection. If you're still worried about the speed then you can call the helpdesk. Prior to this time though they will tell you you need to wait.

VDSL attenuation is measured at a different (higher) frequency, so will always be higher than ADSL.

With the original 16dB attenuation, I'm surprised VDSL was approved for installation though.

The tech who came out today didn't seem to check anything before proceeding with the install, I knew my attenuation was high beforehand but was hoping the new master splitter would help with that.

Before ordering VDSL I messaged a Telecom person on geekzone to check my line, he said my attenuation was high but I'm 667m from the cabinet so must be my internal wiring... now I'm proper confused.

667m from the cabinet doesn't mean you've got 667m of wire to the cabinet. In my case especially I'm less than 100m from the cabinet but the wiring comes down the hill from the cabinet first then back up meaning my cable length is approx 600m total. Just leave DLM to it, I started off at a pretty slow speed which improved rather quickly.

how have you calculated that distance?


cables dont go straight.

take mine for example, im 77M from the cabinet, based off electrical calculations, there is about 210M of copper between me and the cabinet.

I'm just on 1km from exchange, but have discovered my line passes my street to a box and back taking my cable length to 1.6km. My VDSL is 15/1, basically almost the same speed as was my ADSL was.




Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend from $150 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?

we have all made the assumption to measured it with walking or something, clearly the electrical length has been calculated there.


as the telecom person recognised, your attenuation is high. so there *could* be a fault there.


if you really want that to be looked at though, you need to attack it from the attenuation angle rather than speeds.

Yea, could definitely be a fault up the road somewhere, bad joint or something. If is was purely a distance issue, your upstream would be bad too.

ok so looks like have to give it two weeks and see what my speed/attenuation is like then. Mods please don't lock this thread until then?

So if it is a bad joint or whatever, is this something that Chorus can fix? How would I go about it?

You would need to log a fault with your ISP, who would in turn pass this to Chorus to investigate.

What's your lead-in like from the street - not an old aerial tru-rip cable is it?
