rp1790: I've got marginal wiring so would like to look at a master filter. Started on 35 down and now on about 28. Cyril is the only installer in the Wellington region but he's snowed under. Anyone know of another installer in Wellington??

code15: We recently got BigPipe VDSL and are experiencing frequent drop outs. Our house has an old monitored alarm and there is no DSL port in the house.
My question is how can BigPipe advertise free wiring and installation when not installing master filters when required?

code15: We were told by BigPipe we were ready for a VDSL connection. If we had known we had old wiring we would've gone with telecom.
I suggest BigPipe provide a bit more clarity during the signup process to avoid a lot of unhappy customers.
And before you tell us to swtich to telecom, we already paid for a new VDSL modem!

Indirectly you would have had to pay Telecom for your install with VDSL master filter etc - the only difference is that the cost would have benn hidden within your 12-month contract and paid in installments over 12 months. Remember that BigPipe has no contract, so you can bail out at any time.
If you want VDSL, you need a VDSL filter, whatever ISP you go with.
What modem did you get?

BigPipeNZ:
However, I should point out that a master splitter is not required for VDSL in most cases. It will certainly help (in some cases help a lot), but it isn't absolutely necessary except in rare cases.

Quite frankly this is one of the biggest untruths I've ever read on Geekzone.
To be completely honest I think it's time you moved out of your fantasy world and into the real world.
coffeebaron: Wiring stubs are a big killer for VDSL. So whether or not the is a master filter for naked VDSL is a mute point. What is important is a single dedicated feed to the VDSL jack-point separated out from any other internal wiring. The work is pretty much the same as doing a full master filter install; so also whether or not spending an extra minute and a few $$ on a part (that I get a very good price on), it's pretty much a no brainer to just fit the filter. Means easy to go back to POTS if you want to. Also a good peace of mind saying that yes there is a master filter installed should a fault be logged.
To give you an idea how wiring on naked VDSL can affect performance. I recently disconnected a secondary jack-point for someone on naked VDSL and sync increase by 10Mbps. And that was very new, excellent condition wiring too!
