I've got marginal wiring so would like to look at a master filter. Started on 35 down and now on about 28. Cyril is the only installer in the Wellington region but he's snowed under. Anyone know of another installer in Wellington??

We recently got BigPipe VDSL and are experiencing frequent drop outs. Our house has an old monitored alarm and there is no DSL port in the house.

My question is how can BigPipe advertise free wiring and installation when not installing master filters when required?

Read the small print: "What's included in your free connection?

"Most connections will be straightforward and won't require a home visit to get connected.
If you need a technician to come to your place to do wiring, it won't be included in your free connection.

"There are a couple of reasons why you may need a technician to visit you:

1. Brand new home without wiring ...
2. An old home with old wiring.
If you've got old wiring, it won't work well with broadband. We recommend you find an electrician that can sort it out for you."

You have old wiring - get it fixed and install a VDSL master filter.

As above.

Do read the terms and conditions before signing up.

We were told by BigPipe we were ready for a VDSL connection. If we had known we had old wiring we would've gone with telecom.

I suggest BigPipe provide a bit more clarity during the signup process to avoid a lot of unhappy customers.

And before you tell us to swtich to telecom, we already paid for a new VDSL modem!

Indirectly you would have had to pay Telecom for your "free" install with VDSL master filter etc - the only difference is that the cost would have been hidden within your 12-month contract and paid in installments over 12 months. Remember that BigPipe has no contract, so you can bail out at any time.
If you want VDSL, you need a VDSL filter, whatever ISP you go with.
What modem did you get?

I rang up Telecom and they're offering 500GB for $99, VDSL modem, and free connection (including a master filter) with a 12 month contract. I think in our situation (old wiring) it makes sense to just go with telecom and cut our losses on the modem we purchased.

It seems fair enough that BigPipe don't offer a free wiring upgrade being non-contract and all, I just think it needs to be made much clearer that a master filter is required!

We currently have a Draytek Vigor2760n.

I have VDSL2 with Telecom since july last year and it is great.  You might be better off moving to Telecom and get a free master filter installed and sell your existing VDSL2 modem on trade me.

Hi

sorry to hear about your experience.

We try to be as clear as possible that our free standard connection does not include wiring.  We certainly don't want to mislead people, so I'm very sorry if you feel that way.
We definitely don't bury in the terms and conditions.  We provide a link directly on the signup page under the heading "what's included in my free connection", right underneath the plan description, so it sems pretty hard to miss.
We'll certainly be reviewing our UX though to make sure this is visible enough to people.

However, I should point out that a master splitter is not required for VDSL in most cases.  It will certainly help (in some cases help a lot), but it isn't absolutely necessary except in rare cases.

I can't look at your specific case since I don't have enough details from your geekzone profile, but I'd be happy to investigate what's happened if you can DM me your email address that you used to sign up with Bigpipe.

Interestingly, if your house has a monitored alarm then I'm surprised there isn't already a splitter installed (even an older one) - it is generally a requirement to have one with a monitored alarm that goes via the phone line, and that applies to ADSL as well as VDSL.

Your monitored alarm obviously won't work anymore given Bigpipe is naked, so if you can turn it off you may find that helps with the drop outs if it is constantly trying to 'call home'.

Anyway,  PM me your details and I can have a look at your case.

cheers

I could potentially do it but I am not as hardcore as Cyril :) - flick me a DM.

Quite frankly this is one of the biggest untruths I've ever read on Geekzone.

To be completely honest I think it's time you moved out of your fantasy world and into the real world.

I can only agree with you here Steve. My personal view is every house needs a Master Filter.

I think CoffeeBaron said it best in this post:

coffeebaron: Wiring stubs are a big killer for VDSL. So whether or not the is a master filter for naked VDSL is a mute point. What is important is a single dedicated feed to the VDSL jack-point separated out from any other internal wiring. The work is pretty much the same as doing a full master filter install; so also whether or not spending an extra minute and a few $$ on a part (that I get a very good price on), it's pretty much a no brainer to just fit the filter. Means easy to go back to POTS if you want to. Also a good peace of mind saying that yes there is a master filter installed should a fault be logged.

To give you an idea how wiring on naked VDSL can affect performance. I recently disconnected a secondary jack-point for someone on naked VDSL and sync increase by 10Mbps. And that was very new, excellent condition wiring too!
