We have Smart Caps available on most of our current Postpaid plans, which allow you to set a limit so if you go through your allowance it can either stop mobile data with no additional charge (Calls/txt/WiFi work as normal, though MMS won't), or go over by a set amount only. Note this is not available on old/grandfathered plans. Therefore no nasty data bill surprises :)

Wow a lot of great replies--thanks folks!

It's the first 4G (LTE) generation of the iPad, which I brought with me when I moved to NZ in September 2012. I'd been with 2 Degrees, but switched to Telecom because of 4G: I also have an iPhone 5, and with no 2 Degrees 4G in the pipe I thought I'd give Telecom a go.

But couldn't get the Telecom specific carrier settings to download to the device and Telecom wouldn't offer any further support so the device was in a corner gathering dust for the most part. I also have an iPad mini (no data) and tend to use that at home because of the size/weight.

I'll dig into the device after some of these (excellent) suggestions later tonight. Cheers!

So those data usage figures were over 4G?

Wow, just wow. That would be some serious billage!

Also, usually to update carrier settings, you just plug it into iTunes and the first thing it will do is pop up saying a carrier settings update is available.

wait, that is 4G data??? seriously?

And if you are referring to one bill only, then the stats you posted are daily usage? or is that the summary of your last few bills? Even if that;s the case, 20GB in a month is still huge. What on earth are you doing to use that much data?

talking about the latest bill (singular), then listing data usage amounts of 10-20GB (per day?) would be pretty rare on 3/4G

And if that usage were over 3/4G, he might be a little more emotional about the $$$$$$ he has been spending :-D

(presumably you didn't buy data packs either since you weren't expecting it, but even with the largest data packs we are still talking over $1000)

They didn't charge that much--they charged about $165.

How did you get charged so little, considering the price they charge for mobile data? Are you sure it wasn't a problem with their meter instead, and it is just giving you incorrect readings. Or it sounds like it was just normal broadband data.

Me too. Sounds odd. Using that much 4G Data would result in one hell of a bill shock (You'd actually think a Telecom system would flag that before it got that big?)

I think the OP may be using WiFi data at home? They haven't actually answered that question.

Edit: I get from the OPs totals, 77.4GB used.
If on a Telecom Fixed Line broadband plan (40GB), what does 37Gb overage cost? - According to their latest pricing, $1 per GB, so $37 + $75 for the plan <> the $165 claimed.
Maybe an older Broadband plan?

On Mobile, their $39 plan gives you 1GB included, 20c per MB after that = $39 + 76000MB (assuming 1000MB to the GB for simplicity) at 20c = $15,200.

Big difference.

I don't blame you--but it's legit. And it's definitely 3G data: my bill for mobile is broken down by my phone and my tablet. This was all on the Telecom mobile # assigned to the SIM in my iPad.

I suspect Telecom realizes there's a problem too: I've not yet had my escalated returned call from a supervisor. None of this passes the sniff test.
