why all the jitter? was this done while downloading/uploading?

regardless, your errors arent all that bad when calculated out.

you do look like your on a 16ms each way profile, did you reboot your modem a heap or something?

I have not touched the modem and you can see on the router image the connection time 13 hrs and 49 minutes - I have been told not to disconnect the modem whilst it self tunes ?

interesting that its tuned to 16ms profiles then, wait out the 10 days, then see how things are looking is unfortunately your only option right now..

chances are, even if you have a line issue thats causing the problem, telecom wont touch it till afte the 10 days.

Rang helpdesk and having found out i was using Windows 8.1 we inserted DNS manually to no change but then he suggested connecting vdsl modem directly to computer and lo and behold speeds jumped up to 19 again - the switch ( a Netgear Gigaswitch GD608) or the wiring between the modem and my office are now suspect !

Some careful trial and error has my NetGear GS608 switch as the faulty point in the network. It has always worked so well I never thought to question it

Suggestions for replacement anyone? With the Huawei as modem should I consider just another switch or should Ii be placing a router with Firewall immediately behind the Huawei? ( 4PC - one of which is a my home built  HTPC which likes to suck bandwidth from my 2 NAS and a single networked Brother Laser colour printer ) Yes I use Jumbo frames too

I'd also be happy with 19/6mb. My VDSL upload sync hovers between 3 and 4mb. :(

ok I am not finished apparently :

connection /synching said 20 and 6 I was getting 3Mb/s down and 6Mb/s up
Rang Telecom..usual story..then one Tier 2 tech started questioning Windows 8.1..had I tried the speed test on a Windows 7 rig?..I did so –and it was a nice 19 Mb down and 6Mb up.( he was right!)

Inserted DNS settings in the 8.1 adapters settings – no improvement – still 3 Mb/s down and 6Mb/s up

Plugged Ethernet cable directly from 8.1 PC into 10/100 port of back of modem router – hooray ! 19Mb down and 6Mb/s up

Ok Now I am getting somewhere I say : faulty switch or faulty wiring in the wall and patch panel setup ? – so then I plug the modem router 10/100 plug directly into the patch panel under the stairs – 19Mb/s out to the office (and 6 Mb up)
Ahah I cry it’s the switch under the stairs. But then I recheck the Windows 7 rig which is also plugged into this apparently faulty switch – 19Mb/s down and 6Mb/s up ( headache starts)

So….I know its not the wiring in the patch panel or the switch under my desk ( which happens to be identical with the one used above the patch panel)

Basically I see in my mind :

Windows 8.1 -> 1Gb/s connection to switch under desk ( NetGear GS608) -> via patch panel -> directly into 10/100 switch on back of modem router =19Mb/s down and 6Mb/s up

But

Windows 8.1 -> 1Gb/s connection to switch under desk ( NetGear GS608) -> via patch panel -> 1Gb/s connection to switch beneath modem router ( NetGear GS608) -> into 10/100 switch on back of modem router =3 Mb/s down and 6Mb/s up

Compare this with :

Windows 7 Ultimate -> 1Gb/s connection to switch under desk ( TP Link TL –SG 1005SD) -> 1Gb/s connection to switch beneath modem router ( NetGear GS608) -> into 10/100 switch on back of modem router =19 Mb/s and 6Mb/s up

Is Windows 8.1 sulking due to 2 hops of a switch ? can the second switch be having trouble with 8.1 data stream but not with Windows 7 stream? I notice it is only the download speed being affected here ( I get 6 Mb up pretty much any way I want to plug things in)

I can swap which plug goes where on the 8 port switch next to the modem router and it does not seem to change the result . A firewall issue maybe?

I have checked and swapped over the patch cables (not swapped them out though) Same result

I am nearly ready to leave things as they are because with the office patch panel plugged directly into the modem router all the rigs get 19Mb down…but then I have a 10-100 port between my NAS and the HTPC  (no longer Giga switch all the way)

Another question - I think its cat 5 down the drive but the chorus tech did not fit a new cable - he just checked the splitter arrangement.

With vdsl install exactly what should the chorus tech be doing ? I have read in another post :
"When doing a VDSL install a new Cat5 cable is supposed to be run"

the tech should install a central splitter, with a dedicated jackpoint. 95% of the time, this requires a cat5e run to be done from the ETP.

odd that your machine is getting such speed differences through a switch...

Ok a change on the NIC on the Windows 8.1 machine  from Auto negotiate to 1Gb full duplex has beaten this issue ...I have no idea why ( will post a hate 8.1 topic one day soon  sealed )

How long do I wait for dlm to change me off the 16ms plan? My ping is rather hairy when playing BF4 surprised. Connection formally acknowledged by Telecom on Thursday 27th march so my 10 days is until April 6th.

If only slight improvements on this speed can be made its definitely a keeper ...I know I am not scheduled for fibre until the next ice age so this is going to be the last great hope for me.

DLM normally runs upon activation of the vdsl not telecoms side.

telecom dont control DLM, chorus do.

to get down to 1ms again, it may take a little while, good news is, your in your training period.

if your still on 16ms profiles, after the 10 days, ild call telecom, explain that you had issues with a NIC and ended up on a 16ms profile and would like a DLM reset to get it down to something reasonable faster.
