Hi all,
Hoping for some reassurance or explanation of whats gone wrong but here it is :

Was on Telecom adsl2 plan using Netgear 834GT modem - getting connection speeds in the 14 to 16 Mb but noticed in the last few months slower then stuttering video.(Using Cat 6 wired connections all around house with central splitter).
Ookla speedtest would give me between 11 and 14 Mb/s down and just 980Kb  up

I rang Telecom and complained - they confirmed no change of plan at their end. Downstream line attenuation was around 16 so i thought bugger it I will ask for vdsl

Today the Chorus engineer popped in (nice guy by the way) checked my splitter and reconnected the twisted pair just in case but this is what i got :
Using the Telecom Huawei HG630B modem

So connecting at maybe 3 - 4 Mb/s  higher than adsl2  but then if I try a speedtest I get a terrible down which is lower than my up !
My ping has gone from 6 to 20 !( There goes BF4 performance)

Here is the performance drop as indicated by Ookla speedtest

and here is my latest speedtest  cry:

I know the wiring in the house is sound - I thought I was just 481m to the local exchange but when i asked the Chorus tech he said I was cabinetised which means i have no idea how far to give as an estimate of what I expected from vdsl but it surely was more than this !

Suggestions ? I know i am supposed to wait 10 days to let it settle but this seems just terrible.I will be asking for the old adsl2 plan back shortly

Aaaargh this is not going to go down well with spouse

Help me Obi Wan!!!!

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Might just be ny phone cutting it off, but are the line stats included in their full there?

I'll look over this again when i get home.

You say your attenuation was 16db with adsl2 with a splitter installation, that actually puts you very borderline for vdsl.

Your ping has gone up due to dlm on vdsl. Sounds like uour on an 8ms each way profile.

Dlm will try to train this down to dlm-1 which will be 1ms each way.

This should bring you back down to 5s or s.

Dlm will take time to get to thiss point, and itis assuming your line isn't unstable enough to warrant not getting it.

Don't reboot your modem. You want your only reboots to be dire, spaced out and preferably done by dlm itself.

Thank for the quick reply _ I understand I am not to disconnect and reconnect the modem so I have not

What I want to know is why I have been offered vdsl when my attenuation is crap. Shouldnt they have said something ?
(I am sure that when i moved back to Telecom about 2 years ago I was running directly to the Exchange  with a road map distance of 480 metres - yes I know it can jump across the street etc but  now I am cabinetised cry

We have had a brand new concrete telephone pole connected at the bottom of our drive about 3 months ago (  and this would be just after I got the free offer for vdsl with telecom ..I didnt take them up on the offer  and i am wondering if i got cabinetised after this ..hence my crappy line attenuation undecided)

Pm me your address and I'll check out what
Could simply be a case of crosstalk combined with cables not running where they should.

Sounds like something worth looking into.

Chorus used to deny more than 10.8db, they seem to have relaxed it a little recently. Allowing longer lines.

If your sure about thoses figgures, it'd worth looking into.

TeMorituri: ... Downstream line attenuation was around 16 so i thought bugger it I will ask for vdsl ...

Bad call.  (I presume that attenuation was with Cat6 and central filter)
I did the same thing with the same result.
I waited 10 days with minimal improvement - then rolled back to ADSL without penalty.

Just got off the phone from Telecom - despite the Chorus engineer ringing this morning and explaining in detail to Telecom and explaining the vdsl connection
(I heard the phone call) and  the low download speeds it appears that i am still on an adsl2+ plan

Tier 2 says wait until tomorrow....maybe it will update tonight ?

Which I can do .....( no seppuku until then....whew reprieve!wink)

Ok ..one disconnect overnight and now I have this :

Amazing what a phone call to Tier 2 can do eh

I am presuming I have massive latency until the dust settles on the line?

Oh crap !
Got home to find :

and it wont even load the Telecom speedtest - just gives out latency error

I dont understand vdsl terms that well but i think the FEC errors are part of the issue too :

This surely cannot be right !
