If the combo expires are you able to purchase a data only combo again when required or would I have to buy a new SIM. There are no links on the account or combo pages for buying a data only combo (or are we just a little ahead?).

When you register an account for a data only SIM you would just see the Combos applicable for that SIM. The data only Combos are not available to customers with standard SIMS (and vice versa). So yes with a data only SIM you can buy any of the three available data only Combos.

Currently we are running on Telecom's 3G network, but when we migrate to 4G the same SIMS will be 4G ready

Is there any way to get these online? The closest Harvey Norman to me is a 2 hour drive, so would cost me a whole lot more in petrol just to get a sim.

I've asked our accoount manager to talk to Harvey Norman about loading them onto their webstore. They already sell our standard SIMS there so can't think it would be an issue, but will let you know when I get a response.

I think this will be more useful when:

a) The exclusivity period with Harvey Norman expires. This is obviously a mass market retail promotion for harvey norman at this stage, as a way of them differentiating their product offerings, and will no doubt lapse at some point.

b) 'Data only' sims are dropped, as they are annoying and unnecessary, all prepay sims should be the same and allow you to purchase any plan and use in whatever device you like.
It makes it more diffficult and confusing for the consumer being restricted in this way - for example using the portable hotspot feature of your smartphone is now a very mainstream practice, and your average user also wants to be able to text and call from that phone too.
With these sims you have to choose to either sacrifice text/calls or carry an extra hotspot device. Both are poor options.

I can only guess the reason why this wasn't done is because someone thought that giving all existing users these plans would cannibalise the revenue coming from the high data users purchasing multiple packs and/or mean that heavy smartphone users would frequently put high load on the network, streaming video and the like, whereas perhaps the usage patterns of "data only" devices are less intensive? I can only guess here.

In any case until it changes i consider both vodafone and 2degrees offerings superior, despite 2degrees coverage limitations. Even so, the competition is welcomed.

@livingskinny I still have a couple of these data sims that I fire up once a year. All reference to these has been wiped from your website. Am I correct in assuming I can simply top up the correct denomination (I usually go for the $60/5G) and that the data will flow once again?

The deal @1eStar uses is a price for the data that expires after 3 or 6 months whereas the combos you have to renew every month.

Additionally, the SkinnyDirect combos does not roll-over and the minutes don't include AU. Still it's a good deal if you use up that much date in a month.

Procrastination eventually pays off.

I'm still using our original HN supplied Skinny SIM card in a Huawei WiFi hotspot as a backup to our new Netspeed RBI data plan.
I have regularly topped up for the last couple of years perhaps twice monthly at $120 for 10GB.
Now that we have 130GB for $100/month that plan is looking rather expensive!

The new Skinny Direct $30 plan is looking very tempting as our new backup option.
The original plan was either 5GB ($60) or 10GB ($120) expiring in 6 months.

My maths:
Existing Skinny data plan - $12/GB/month eventually used or not.
New Skinny data plan - $10/GB/30 days used or not. $10/GB topup.

I will be changing when my old plan data is exhausted.
P.S. We are full time travelling in a motorhome.

The data only SIMS met a market need when they were launched but that is fairly limited now that Skinny Direct has launched. They are no longer available for purchase (and haven't been for some time) and whilst the existing ones can still be used at the moment the Combos for these will be retired. When that happens we'll let the customers know what new plans are available for them to switch to.

An email from Skinny advises that we will no longer be able to purchase data only packs on these sims from January 25. This means the only remaining 6mth packs in NZ are zone data from 2degrees.
