Like above, while we did end up changing, Telecom (life time customer at that point) did offer a free install and upgrade to VDSL if we signed up again for 12 months. I would say perhaps the OP got someone on a bad day?

telecom seemed to have a below the line promo going in june where existing customers could have a free vdsl install on a 12month contract
given that the modem they send out on the $99 install is worth $149 retail through them, and you get the additional wiring/splitter, i'd still say it was value for money

Also surprised OP didn't get free install. About 6 months ago I think, our 2Wire ADSL2+ modem broke. Telecom wouldn't fix it as it was 3 years old and we didn't want to buy a new one. Asked about VDSL, and they signed us up on a 12 month contract where we got free install (Though we already had a filter installed) and a free modem.
Since you've now signed with Vodafone, I guess it's pointless telling you to speak to Telecoms Sales team/Retention team.
quickymart: I had to pay the VDSL installation fee. But the Chorus tech also redid some of the phone cabling in my house and installed new cables where required. So I consider it money well spent. And my broadband is much faster now :)
I heard Chorus are making homes fibre ready when installing VDSL services by running new hybrid fibre & copper cable from the EPT to the modem location. Smart move so in the future they will just splice the outside plant fibre to the existing pre-run fibre.
So you might of paid Chorus to make your house fibre ready :)
