Stolen already! :(

Never ever had a phone stolen before in my life (or really anything at all of mine ever stolen, except for once a bike as a kid), and now I've had two phones stolen only a week apart. (one week and 30 hours to be more precise...)

Was at work, taking a shower. (I cycle to and from work each day)

Obviously would be a silly idea to take anything electronic into the shower with me... so it was on just the other side. Inside my cycling jersey's rear pocket, underneath a bunch of other clothes I was going to change into after the shower.

Must have been stolen during the few minutes I was in the shower, I'm very surprised. Even to get onsite a person needs a security pass.

My old phone (the one before the Okta Touch, got stolen last week. The phone was a cheap one however, and 2 1/2 years old) was taken right out the pocket of my jeans while I was wearing them!!

Seems like I've just hit an incredibly bad run of bad luck, never had anything like this happen before.

Completely off topic, but a comment on things being stolen... Back at my previous work someone complained he left a dehumidifier by his desk during the weekend and it wasn't there on Monday morning.

Needless to say a fellow employee was caught on camera taking the said dehumidifier out of the office, through the lifts - during Sunday.

Trust no one, Mr Mulder...

I've been thinking, exactly how much is a stolen Okta Touch worth (as a phone) to a theif?

After all, it is on One Bill. They can't simply keep on buying pre-paid cards to keep on using it, and I've blocked it from making any calls etc...

They don't even have a charger for it, let alone any of the other little pieces (other than the case it came with, which I was using to protect it from damage.... ironic really).

I know Telecom doesn't let parallel imports be used on their networks, so I doubt that likewise the theif would be able to easily reconnect the phone. Also, it is not like Vodafone where they theif could simply swap in their own sim card.

Soo... other than as a mp3 player / camera, what good is to the theif?!?!

As long as you have told Telecom that it has been stolen, they might need you to file a police report? Then based on the ESN the phone will forever be barred from the Telecom network.

As the ESN will not change, no one can get that phone reconnected.

The same applies for Vodafone handsets, they will bar them from their network (within NZ), so long as you jump through the hoops to get it done.

Not really possible, there are hundreds of people who work here... did ask around those who are in this building on the site if they had seen anybody from elsewhere hanging around. But nah.... didn't really turn up anything, as I kind of expected. Oh well... :(

On Telecom, if you are the account holder, its a painless 2 minute process to get your phone blocked, call and ask for full OUTGOING bars, a 'stolen' tag, and your contact details.

Prepaid is a little different, as you have to provide some identifiable details to prove your ownership of the phone (call details, frequent numbers etc).

Leave inbound unblocked, so you can taunt the thief. I have recovered a few phones this way, one by texting for a web messaging service, saying the person had texted a competition number and won a free iPod Video, than I phoned the next day and asked for their address, then I went around and asked to see the phone as proof of winners identity (whilst holding my empty iPod packaging) - then I just walked off with the phone and said "you are lucky I am not the Police" ... lol

Have used similar methods to recover phones now and then.

lol, that is balls to do that! I blocked incoming calls however, this way all the various txt messages getting sent to me
will not get through. Instead I'm told they will get queued up, and
I'll be able to recieve them once I've got my replacement phone. (for some weird reason I couldn't quote your whole message, it had "bad words" in it... tut tut tut! And there I was thinking it was me using the word "balls")

2 minutes?!?! You have forgotten the time spent on hold.... last night during just ONE of the times when I was calling up telecom I managed to eat all of my dinner and then another 2nd dinner just during one of the periods of being put on hold during that same call....
