I'll jump in on this one quickly.

  • WiFi is notoriously not-as-good as ethernet. PS4 WiFi doubly so.
  • If you do as other posters here have suggested and test your PS4's connection on ethernet, there's a really good chance this problem will just kind of go away.
  • If it doesn't, read on:
  • Bigpipe uses CG-NAT. Basically, this means that your IP address will change periodically.
  • Some users, often gamers, would prefer a static IP address, for game hosting and such, so we offer this as an option for a one-off payment of $45.
  • If you're still having trouble matchmaking on a wired connection, you might wish to try the static IP.
  • Do try testing on ethernet first though. You should be fine.
Good luck!

toejam316: Not really gonna be helpful, but the PS4's built in wireless is abysmal, just like the PS3 before it. If at all possible swap to Ethernet or Powerline, I reckon. Give it a go hard wired, and see if it's still giving you grief.

I second this suggestion.

We had similar poor performance from our PS4 (and PS3) when using wifi. We purchased some of these, and we experienced an increase in performance from 700 Kbps, to 7-10 Mbps.

Hi everyone. I just want to say thanks for all of the great tips. Unbelievable response given I only posted last night, I really appreciate it!!

I've been given a bit of stick from the flatmates because I signed us up to UFB to get faster internet primarily so we could watch Netflix etc faster on tv via the Playstation. The result has been much slower/unusable internet to the PS4, after having a slow but usable connection through an ADSL connection and 3 year old Vodafone Router/Modem. Sorry for the moan but there appears to be some hidden costs in moving to UFB that the average consumer should be aware of.

Thanks to the comments I seem to have (fingers crossed) a solution - thank you! I now have the familiar flat issue of who pays for the connection, given I've paid for everything so far. Thanks once again for all the advice, I will post the outcome of the ethernet test.

It's not really a hidden cost.  Your new modem is almost certainly better in every way than you vodafone one.   It's just that in your case you happen to have some an issue with the PS4 via wifi.

If this were something that was common with UFB, or even just with Bigpipe, we would see loads of posts about this exact issue on geekzone.  We don't.
So logically it's almost certainly something unique to your case, and not something about 'UFB that consumers need to be aware of' - likely down to some combination of the router's wifi, the PS4, the position of the router, and potentially the other devices you have connected.

(all the above is assuming a positive outcome of your ethernet test. If it turns out ethernet test is still very slow, then this probably does require further digging.  But wifi is by far and away the most likely culprit given the set of 'symptoms' you have posted here)

Understood and I agree with you. Objectively the internet is faster and the router is better than the old one. To install UFB we were forced to change the router location.

Hidden cost is a strong word but (provided it is a wifi issue) it appears new kit is required to get the same level of connectivity that we had in with ADSL. Essentially an added cost for the switch to UFB.

Depending on the make/model/features of your old modem/router, you may be able to repurpose it to be a switch, if you do end up using an Ethernet based solution (either direct to your new modem, or via Ethernet over Power). I did that with our old one, so I could connect 3 devices from one Powerline adapter.

I spent almost $700 on network gear to give the absolute best experience that my UFB plan could offer. It depends how much you value your internet. Being the main source of entertainment in our household I saw it as a small cost but have zero regrets doing it.

Be thankful you've got UFB. There are plenty of people (including myself at the moment) that are currently on lesser connections who would love UFB and even some who would spend upwards of $10,000 for UFB to be installed rurally via the Chorus Rural Fibre initiative. WiFi is not a replacement for Ethernet and never was. Plenty of options here for you to consider otherwise your WiFi is working as designed with the PS4.
