Nope it's AMR-WB - the same as Vodafone and 2degrees have had for the last 3 years or so.

VoLTE has nothing to do with HD-Voice, apart from some of the media hype about VoLTE supposedly = better voice quality.

Any idea when the PSTN interconnects will be changed to support direct connect IP and not that wonderful stuff from the 80's...

From what I gather (I am far from an expert on the subject) the main benefits of VoLTE are the enablement of 3rd party OTT (Over-the-top) voice providers and seamless roaming to VoWiFi (or other data access types as and when they are available).  It is essentially integrated/seamless VoIP on the handset, but the standard also provides for the other things to make it work well, such as QoS on the network.

The VoWiFi play is a good way to get load off the LTE network for those who aren't in WiFi coverage, I've heard it's becoming very popular in the US at least.

When the two biggest players offer SIP Interconnects.  In fairness one of them does, sort of, but not easily.

With very few exceptions every other telco in NZ is using SIP to interconnect.  

Also, many don't limit codecs in use, so if your endpoint has G.722 preferred and whoever you're talking to has G.722 preferred... then your call will use G.722.

I am not sure which carriers are offering VoLTE/VoWiFi roaming but someone was telling me they had it with their carrier.  I don't see any mention of it in that page, though?

It's popular in the US simply because their mobile networks are just so incredibly poor.

Our company here in AKL uses nothing but Spark mobiles , made 3 calls to spark phones and all seemed to be in HD voice as of this morning. The improvement is pretty dramatic. I can finally hear clearly, about time
